Big Lake North Rec Site
Overview
Big Lake North Rec Site serves as a premier gateway to one of Alaska's most active motorized lakes. Situated in the heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, this state-run facility offers a classic Alaskan camping experience where the forest meets the water. It is a destination defined by its vibrant energy during the summer months and its peaceful, wooded atmosphere in the shoulder seasons. While it maintains a rustic feel, its proximity to urban centers makes it a staple for those seeking a quick escape into nature.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from Wasilla, Alaska, the site sits on the northern shore of Big Lake. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense birch and spruce forests that provide a sense of seclusion despite the area's popularity. The lake itself is the focal point, offering expansive views of the water and distant mountains. It provides a convenient base for travelers exploring the Mat-Su Valley, serving as a midpoint between the urban amenities of Anchorage and the rugged wilderness of the interior.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state recreation site, the focus is on natural utility rather than luxury resort amenities. The park features approximately 60 campsites suitable for RVs and tents, though it is important to note that these are dry camping sites without electricity or water hookups. Visitors have access to essential facilities including vault toilets, a hand-pump for potable water, and picnic shelters. One of the most significant features is the large boat launch, which accommodates the high volume of watercraft that frequent the lake throughout the summer season.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is undoubtedly the water, making it a hub for boating and jet skiing. Anglers often visit the lake to fish for landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, and arctic char. Beyond the water, the site is close to the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, which offers more tranquil canoeing and hiking opportunities. For those interested in local history and sled dog racing, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters in Wasilla is just a short drive away, providing a unique cultural detour for travelers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for active families and boaters who prioritize direct water access over modern hookups. If you travel with an adventurous spirit and enjoy a social, lively atmosphere, you will appreciate the weekend energy here. It is also an excellent choice for self-contained RVers who want a scenic, affordable place to stay while exploring the Mat-Su region. It is less suited for those seeking a silent, secluded retreat during peak holidays, as it remains a favorite local spot for motorized recreation.

Very kid friendly went twice and there were a bunch of kids my daughter loved playing with. Saw no leaches

I really do enjoy camping here at this spot. It's nice because it's close. But this year was a bit unsatisfying. The place was dirty with little bits of trash everywhere. No one followed any of the rules, and it was loud until 3 am

Well nobody was there but my wife and I launched our kayaks from here and did some fishing. Loved it and will go back again.

The camp was good and the lake was beautiful, but there was someone next to us that came at 1am and ran a generator for an hour which was very noisy and we could not sleep so we needed to move in the middle of the night. Camp could make the signs that generators are forbidden during the night more visible.

Love it. Great place to swim and paddle around. Clean and easy to keep an eye on all the kids.
