Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 60 miles north of Anchorage, the park is easily reached via the George Parks Highway. The surrounding landscape is defined by the massive 2,500-acre lake and views of the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains in the distance. While the area feels like a getaway, its proximity to the town of Big Lake means that essential supplies and local dining are just a few minutes away from the campground entrance.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 22 campsites that are primarily suited for smaller RVs, camper vans, and tents. Visitors will find paved or gravel parking pads, though utility hookups are not available, reflecting the traditional nature of Alaska state parks. Key features include:
- A large boat launch providing easy access for motorboats and jet skis.
- Comfortable picnic areas equipped with fire rings and tables.
- Accessible vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water.
- A designated swimming area and beach for summer relaxation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The main draw is undoubtedly the water, where fishing for rainbow trout and landlocked salmon is a common pastime throughout the season. Beyond the lake, the nearby town of Wasilla offers the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Museum, providing a deep dive into Alaska’s mushing history. For those looking to explore the mountains, the scenic Hatcher Pass is a short drive away, offering world-class hiking trails and a glimpse into the state’s gold mining heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This site is an ideal choice for active travelers and families who own watercraft and want to be in the middle of the action. It is less about quiet solitude and more about the excitement of Alaskan summer life on the water. RVers who prefer a social environment and easy access to motorized sports will find this recreation site perfectly suited to their travel style while exploring the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Big lake South State recreation site is located on the beautiful shores of big lake in big lake, Alaska. The site is very well-maintained. There is a large gravel parking lot with a fee station. There are benches, picnic table, a boat dock, as well as a camping site. They are beautiful, majestic views of big lake and the overall ambiance is wonderful. I highly recommend.

Not much if anything unless you are putting in a boat

This place is great for the day. There are several camping spots and a boat launch. The campsites are very close together. I can't imagine trying to have a small tent and family here with other campers. We visited for the day and it was great for our kids to play in the water. We did notice the camp attendant speaking harshly at others using the campsite. It is a beautiful spot to enjoy with some limitations.

The beach here is fine, smallish, sandy with some rocks bottom. Bathroom is close to swimming area. It's always been pretty busy when we are there, but my biggest complaint is the something like $7 you have to pay to park! And yes they enforce it closely. Camping spots are minimal, a little ways from the parking lot, but not far from swimming area. All have a fire ring and mist have a picnic table.
