We stayed at Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort in one of the train car units in October, and it was easily one of the most disappointing lodging experiences we’ve ever had — especially for the price (nearly $800 for three nights). From the moment we walked in, it was obvious the unit hadn’t been properly cleaned or maintained in a long time. There was thick dust buildup, cobwebs in corners and on light fixtures, and visible grime on multiple surfaces — even the inside of the front door. We found a dirty sock on the floor and an empty tissue box shoved under the TV. The bed frame was broken, kitchen countertop was broken with large amounts of grout missing, several lamps didn’t work, and overall, the train car felt run-down and neglected. It wasn’t just the unit. The entire property looked uncared for. The sprinklers outside our window pounded against the glass at 2 a.m., waking us up and forcing us to go outside in the dark to fix them ourselves. The convenience store was rundown, the soda fountain machine didn’t work, and there was no coffee so we had to drive 10 miles each morning just to get coffee. There is NO restaurant on site. They sell gas station nachos and hotdogs. They advertise Starlink satellite internet but there are only hotspots around the property. I reported the state of the unit to staff upon checkout and followed up with photos afterward. Instead of taking responsibility, management chose to minimize our experience and referenced a supposed “strict no refund policy” that doesn’t appear anywhere on their website or in the confirmation email. When the owners finally responded, they brushed off everything as a matter of “personal standards” and stated "after reviewing all the facts in the situation, a 10% refund seems appropriate, if not generous". The resort is now under new management, and it shows. The focus seems to be entirely on increasing revenue, not maintaining the property or caring for guests. The way they’ve handled our situation — dodging responsibility, minimizing our experience, and inventing policies to avoid accountability — says everything about their priorities. For a place that advertises itself as a “resort,” the experience was anything but. The property is in disrepair, the cleanliness is unacceptable, and the management clearly cares more about money than the people spending it. Save yourself the disappointment — this place is not worth your time or your money. The photos I’ve attached speak for themselves.

The Big Rock Candy Mountain is listed on RoadsideAmerica.com. You drive right by it if you are headed north on 89. You can pull off in nearby parking lots to explore the area. We mainly went for the photo ops but there is a resort, restaurant, rentals, gas station and convenience store at this site. The beautiful multi colored land formations are worth a stop and you can explore them for free.

What a unique and fun experience! To stay in a cutely renovated caboose (one of 12, arranged like a small village on the banks of a river), with a 9 mile paved bike trail and beautiful mountains all around, was one of my favorite stops. The staff was very helpful in dealing with an issue we had. If you have bikes or kids or an ATV, you will love this place.

We run a dog grooming shop and rented 5 cabins for ourselves, our 4 employees, their spouses, 1 child and 7 dogs. The manager kindly accommodated our request to house 3 dog's in two of the cabins. Charity and Sandy were so helpful throughout our 3 day vacation; booking tubing trips, baking pizzas, serving ice cream, etc. The cabins were just steps away from the river and shaded by trees. Bridger was so helpful in transporting all of us, our dogs, and our paddle boards to the tubing drop off twice in one day. We had so much fun!

Just getting open for the season, restaurant menu had breakfast and lunch items. Lots of sandwiches, salads, etc. No real dinner entrees. Food was good and service was attentive. Scenic location.

Fun little place to rent a decent cabin and enjoy some outdoor activities. Really enjoyed floating the river. We loved our guide Josh.
