Big Run
Overview
Big Run State Park offers a primitive escape within the rugged mountains of Garrett County. Located at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, this park is part of the extensive Savage River State Forest. It serves as a basecamp for those seeking a quiet backcountry experience rather than a commercial resort atmosphere. The park is characterized by its steep hillsides and serene waters, providing a stark contrast to the more bustling tourist areas found elsewhere in Western Maryland.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Swanton, Maryland, the park sits at the northern tip of the Savage River Reservoir. The surrounding landscape is defined by the dense hardwoods of the Appalachian Mountains, creating a canopy of vibrant colors in the fall and cool shade in the summer. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by thousands of acres of protected state forest, offering a deep sense of seclusion and a true connection to the natural wilderness of the region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping destination, amenities are focused on the essentials for self-sufficient travelers. The park features non-electric campsites that can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. While there are no hookups, visitors have access to vault toilets and hand-pumped water. A key feature is the boat launch, which provides direct access to the reservoir for non-motorized or electric-motor watercraft, making it a favorite spot for those who enjoy peaceful paddling and fishing away from motorboat traffic.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this area. The Savage River Reservoir is renowned for its fishing, particularly for trout and bass. Hikers can explore the Monroe Run Trail, a scenic path that winds through the forest and offers multiple stream crossings and beautiful overlooks. For those willing to drive a short distance, the amenities of Deep Creek Lake are accessible, though most visitors prefer to stay within the park’s boundaries to enjoy the solitude and high-altitude scenery.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize nature over luxury amenities. If you enjoy dry camping and want to unplug from digital distractions, Big Run provides the perfect environment. It is particularly well-suited for anglers and kayakers looking for easy water access without the noise of gas-powered engines. Travelers seeking a rustic, off-the-beaten-path adventure will find this park to be a refreshing change of pace from traditional campgrounds.

Stayed 4 nights 5 days great quiet little campground but be prepared. The only advertised firewood is 40 minutes one way to new Germany State Park so if you are relying on finding fire wood be aware it's a drive.

Campsite #128 was a beautiful spot with plenty of space and a great atmosphere. The terrain was a bit uneven, so it took a little scouting to find a semi-level area for my tent—but once I did, it was smooth sailing. Overall, a peaceful and scenic place to camp. Just come prepared to do a little site prep and you’ll have a great stay!

Beautiful park, awesome place to primitive camp! My choice in the time of year for camping here was kinda crazy for a tent 😅🤣, but sometimes the worst times can be the best times. Depends on your perspective in hindsight besides..lok at these amazing pics! Definitely coming back in the spring/summer

we went camping here over 4th of July, we unfortunately did have to cut our trip short due to a weird lady randomly just stopping at the entrance of our campsite and then sitting there when it was close to 10pm, we did end up leaving afterwards due to the nature of her, but that isn't the campsites fault. just a reminder to be aware of your surroundings and of people. I really enjoyed the scenery and not having any cell service, the fishing spot was slightly hard to find along with our campsite, so really have your eyes peeled. the driving to get to anything kind of takes away the whole camping experience, but it was nice nonetheless. the bathrooms are really bad, so definitely bring one of those camping toilets (we didn't, but that's our mistake). The whole experience was really good for my first time camping.

Although i did not do any camping, the area does have some nice fields with roads that lead to the Savage river. I saw quite a few people who had set up their tents, canopies, and grills all ready to relax and fish. There is access to the upper Savage Reservoir and a lot of campsite campers had kayaks. This area - the upper stream that flows into the Savage Reservoir - is just beautiful water for fly or ultralight trout fishing. There are pulloffs nearby with DNR fishing information.
