Bighorn/Doyle Creek

Overview

Tucked away in the heart of the Bighorn National Forest, Bighorn/Doyle Creek offers a quintessential Wyoming mountain experience for travelers seeking solitude. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 8,100 feet, this campground serves as a high-country retreat from the summer heat. Unlike modern commercial resorts, it prioritizes a peaceful mountain atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the lodgepole pines replaces the noise of highway traffic.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off the Cloud Peak Skyway (Highway 16), about 35 miles west of Buffalo, the park is nestled within a dense forest of evergreen trees. The surrounding landscape is defined by the rugged beauty of the Bighorn Mountains, featuring dramatic granite outcrops and lush alpine meadows. Doyle Creek meanders nearby, providing a soothing soundtrack and easy access to the water’s edge for those staying in the forested camping loops.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, making it ideal for those who enjoy a rustic camping experience without the distractions of modern technology. The facility focus is on simplicity and natural beauty, offering the following basic features:

  • Spacious wooded sites designed to provide maximum privacy and shade.
  • Standard vault toilets and potable water available via a central hand pump.
  • Traditional fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables at every site.

While there are no electrical or water hookups, the generous spacing between sites offers a true sense of mountain seclusion.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity in this high-altitude playground. The campground is a prime starting point for exploring the Cloud Peak Wilderness, where miles of pristine hiking and equestrian trails await. Anglers can test their luck fishing for brook trout in Doyle Creek or visit nearby alpine lakes. The drive along the Bighorn Scenic Byway offers stunning vistas, and the historic town of Buffalo provides a glimpse into Western history and local culture.

Truly a great spot if you want to get away. This was a hidden gem for our travels and one we wish we would have stayed at more days. Lots of tall pines but you can find places to see a beautiful night sky.

Great for RV's but all the generators are very nosey for tent campers and all the generators scare away the wildlife. Restrooms are extremely clean! The spaces are close together in some spots, I was tenting and it was very difficult to sleep from the chorus of generators from all the RV's but besides that, great campsite. I do not recommend for tent campers unfortunately.

We spent 3 nights @ Doyle June 2021. The vault toilets here are the cleanest we have ever seen in all of our years camping. Jen, the Camp Host is FANTASTIC. Friendly, helpful, attentive without hovering. The campground is just BEAUTIFUL, even in the rain :) Very well maintained neat and clean. We tried our hand at fly fishing in doyle creek, had a lot of fun, but not much for keepers. Other then the rain, we had a very nice stay. We will definitely be back!

Nice, out of the way campgrounds. The bathrooms we're kept clean and stocked. Wood was available to buy. The hostess was nice and very efficient. Would go here again.
