Birkenhead Lake

Overview

Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential British Columbia wilderness experience. Located north of Pemberton, this park is known for its dramatic mountain backdrops and serene atmosphere. It provides a rugged escape from the more crowded coastal areas, making it a favorite for RVers who prioritize natural beauty. The park protects a diverse ecosystem, offering visitors a chance to stay in an old-growth forest setting while remaining accessible for vehicle-based camping.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 55 kilometers north of Pemberton, the park is nestled within the Coast Mountains. The drive follows the Pemberton Portage Road, leading travelers into a landscape characterized by towering peaks and dense sub-alpine greenery. The centerpiece is the lake itself, which features crystal-clear water that reflects the surrounding snow-capped summits. This remote location ensures a quiet environment where the sounds of the forest replace the noise of the city.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park, the facilities are designed for self-sufficient travelers. The campground features spacious gravel pads that can accommodate various RV sizes. While there are no hookups, the park provides essential wilderness amenities:

  • Well-maintained pit toilets located throughout the camping loops.
  • Hand-pumped water stations for non-potable use.
  • A concrete boat launch for easy lake access.

Each site typically includes a fire ring and a heavy-duty picnic table, making it easy to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here. The Birkenhead Lake Trail is a popular route for both hikers and mountain bikers. Visitors can also enjoy several activities:

  • Fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the clear water.
  • Swimming at the sandy beach area near the day-use site.
  • Opportunities for nature photography and wildlife viewing.

The area is home to mountain goats and bears, so proper attractant management is always required.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who enjoy off-grid camping and want to disconnect from digital distractions. It is best suited for travelers who appreciate a rustic environment rather than a luxury resort experience. Families who love backcountry adventures and water-based activities will find plenty to keep them busy. If you are looking for a peaceful mountain retreat with direct access to the great outdoors, this park is a perfect fit for your next trip.

Far but very nice place to camp. Staff are friendly and courteous. The lake is spectacular especially early morning when there’s no people. Some bears sighting thou so beware. Don’t leave any food unattended. Always use common sense. Remember, a fed bear is a dead bear.

Dirty off road but manageable to drive, nice mountain and clear water that you can see some fish. Can swim, kayak and canoeing also boat launching is available. Be careful as there is wildlife that my cross the road. Great to area for family and your dog to spent a day or camping.

Excellent destination. Long drive to get there, however, any kind of vehicle can drive on the FSR. Despite the campground being officially closed, effective September 30th, we camped in the still accessible tent area, last weekend. During daytime it was hot in the sun. Water was cool, but not freezing; still good for a quick jump in the lake. We explored the hiking trails around the lake. The nights were freezing cold - our campfire, kept us warm. Less than 20 people stayed over night.

An absolutely stunning experience. We stayed for four nights and never got o et the relative solitude for a drive in provincial campground that included such great scenery. The campground is also incredibly managed and maintained by staff that is on top of registration, maintaining the campsites, ensuring everyone puts their bear attractants away, and answering visitor questions. The campsites are large and gravel surfaced with great drainage and the staff rake them out after each guest. The fire pits are cleaned and ready to go and the garbage and put toilets are attended to multiple times a day. Just a note that the campground is 15 km off the highway down a gravel road, so you’ll probably want to drive it during daylight. Lots of hiking trails and a great calm mountain fed lake for boating.

We visit multiple times every year. Beautiful campgrounds and so great to have a designated dog beach. If you're lucky, you can spot some mountain goats. Good lake for fishing, swimming and paddle sports. Decent number of overflow/FCFS spots available as well. No cell service or powered sites fyi.
