Bitterroot/Alta
Overview
Bitterroot/Alta offers a peaceful, rustic retreat nestled deep within the Bitterroot National Forest. This destination is deeply rooted in American conservation history, as it sits near the site of the nation’s very first forest ranger station. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park provides an authentic camping experience where the focus remains on the natural landscape and the quiet solitude of the Montana mountains. It is a place where the sounds of the wind through the trees replace the noise of traffic.
Location & Surroundings
Located about 30 miles south of Darby, the campground is surrounded by a dense canopy of ponderosa pines and Douglas firs. The park is positioned near the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, a waterway famous for its clear mountain water and scenic banks. The high-elevation setting ensures that the air remains crisp and cool even in mid-July, providing a perfect climate for outdoor relaxation. The remote nature of the site ensures that light pollution is minimal, offering incredible stargazing opportunities.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a classic Forest Service facility designed for simplicity and durability. The park provides the essential features needed for a comfortable wilderness stay:
- Vault toilets located conveniently near the campsites.
- A manual hand pump for accessing fresh drinking water.
- Spacious sites featuring fire rings and picnic tables.
While there are no electrical hookups or dump stations on-site, the layouts provide enough room for many medium-sized RVs to set up comfortably. Travelers should arrive with full water tanks and plenty of supplies, as the nearest services are back in the town of Darby.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many is the historic Alta Ranger Station, a landmark that offers a glimpse into early 20th-century forestry life. For active travelers, the area is a gateway to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, offering miles of rugged hiking trails. The river is a premier destination for blue-ribbon fly fishing, where anglers can test their skills against native trout species while enjoying the stunning mountain backdrop.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who enjoy boondocking and are fully prepared to be self-sufficient. It is a top choice for nature photographers and wildlife watchers who want to be close to the action. If your travel style involves trading luxury amenities for a pristine wilderness experience and historic charm, Bitterroot/Alta provides the perfect setting for your next Montana road trip.

NICO Fishing - Table Rock Fishing Guide
A perfect place for camping! The facilities were spotless, especially the bathrooms, which were the cleanest we’ve ever seen. Hosts Chris and Karen go above and beyond to keep the campground in top shape. The pit bathrooms were immaculate—truly impressive. Some of our favorite highlights were the peaceful riverside setting, the private and well-spaced campsites, and the convenience of fresh water on site. It really feels like a hidden gem in the Bitterroot! Bonus highlight: I even caught a few small brook trout from the river using a dry fly with a 7x leader (all catch and release). Highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a pristine, quiet, and memorable camping experience.

Super clean camp sites and vault toilet rooms were impeccably clean. Nice area to sit by the river as well. Fishing was good too. Campsite had very nice Pilot Rock firepits with adjustable grills. Each site had oversized picnic tables. We took our mountain bikes and had a nice ride up the road and saw a Buffalo farm. Looking forward to going back.

Wonderful campground hosts. Clean and neat sites, good water and the cleanest bathrooms ever. I think we saw 2 flies in 4 days of use. Very much enjoyed our stay.

The camping spots are really nice. Each one has a table and a nice flat spot to park your camper. I especially like that they have outhouses and they were really clean and actually smelled good. Alta creek is close by so you can play in the water, if you can take the cold temperature of the water.
