Black Canyon RV Park & Campground

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Located near the rim of one of Colorado's most dramatic geological wonders, Black Canyon RV Park & Campground serves as a peaceful gateway for high-altitude explorers. Situated in Cimarron, this park offers a straightforward and welcoming atmosphere for travelers navigating the scenic Highway 50 corridor. It is an ideal spot for those who want to trade the busy city lights of larger hubs for clear mountain nights and easy access to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled within the rugged beauty of the Cimarron Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and dramatic mesas. Its location provides a unique vantage point between the bustling towns of Montrose and Gunnison. Travelers will appreciate the unobstructed views of the Colorado sky and the proximity to the Cimarron River. The high-desert landscape creates a sense of seclusion, making it a perfect retreat after a long day of driving through the Gunnison National Forest.

Amenities & Park Features

Designed with modern travelers in mind, the park features spacious sites that accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Many sites offer full hookups with 50-amp service, ensuring a comfortable stay even in the remote mountains. Guests have access to essential facilities including:

  • Clean restrooms and hot showers
  • On-site general store and gift shop
  • Convenient laundry facilities
  • Pet-friendly walking areas

The well-maintained gravel pads allow for easy setup of large motorhomes, while the peaceful environment ensures a restful night under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the nearby Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, known for its steep cliffs and world-class hiking trails. For water enthusiasts, the Blue Mesa Reservoir is just a short drive away, offering opportunities for boating and fishing. History buffs can visit the Cimarron Visitor Center to see the historic Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad trestle. The surrounding area is also a hotspot for photography, particularly during the golden hour when the canyon walls glow.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a top choice for nature photographers and hikers who want to be first on the trails at daybreak. It is perfectly suited for retirees and couples seeking a quiet, no-frills basecamp that prioritizes location and cleanliness over resort-style splash pads. We had a great experience here! Bathrooms were super clean along with the grounds. We were locked out of our camper, the whole camp grounds came to help along with owner Bob! Felt at home and didn’t have to worry. Great location for exploring. Definitely will return.

My partner and I just camped here while we visited Black Canyon NP and it was wonderful! Kind hosts, incredible views and very well maintained grounds and facilities. We cannot recommend this beautiful place enough to stay!!! It was truly a little slice of heaven in the mountains :) hope we can come back someday!

Black Canyon RV park and campground was awesome! Bob and Julie were super friendly, the sites were spaced nicely, grassy campsites, cute playhouse for kids, incredible views and extremely clean bathrooms and showers!! Loved our quick stay!

Bob and Julie run a very clean and secure RV campground. The view of the valley and mountains is lovely. The bathooms/showers and laundry were spotless. There is an electric gate with code to enter for security. Also, Bob was very helpful in pointing out other hikes within 5 miles that were fabulous.

Owner, Julie is rude. We have always drove past this place and wanted to stay. We finally got the opportunity to stop and it was fairly evident she wasn't interested in potential new clients. All we wanted to do was look and see if our rig would fit. Beautiful views but not that good to put up with a angry, unprofessional owner. Go to Montrose or Gunnison!
