Black Hills/Cook Lake

Overview

Cook Lake Recreation Area, situated within the Black Hills National Forest, offers a serene and rustic escape for those looking to disconnect. Located near Alva, Wyoming, this campground provides a picturesque setting atop a high bank overlooking the sparkling 30-acre Cook Lake. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and serves as a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts who prefer the sounds of the forest over highway traffic and commercial noise. The park is known for its rugged beauty and the sense of seclusion it provides to every visitor.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled in the Bear Lodge Mountains, a northern and often overlooked portion of the Black Hills. Surrounded by lush ponderosa pine and aspen trees, the environment provides ample shade and a sense of deep isolation from the modern world. The local terrain features dramatic limestone cliffs and rolling hills, creating a quintessential Wyoming wilderness backdrop. The elevation here ensures cooler summer temperatures, making it a refreshing haven for travelers during the peak of the summer travel season.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities focus on providing a primitive camping experience. RVers should arrive fully prepared for dry camping, as there are no electricity, sewer, or water hookups at the individual sites. The park features well-maintained vault toilets and seasonal potable water accessible via shared hand pumps. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, which are perfect for traditional campfire cooking and evening relaxation under a vast, unpolluted night sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this secluded spot. The Cook Lake Trail offers an accessible loop around the water, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching, specifically for osprey and bald eagles. Anglers frequently visit to fish for trout and sunfish, while the lake’s calm waters are ideal for kayaking and canoeing since motorized boats are not permitted. For a scenic day trip, the historic Devils Tower National Monument is a short, beautiful drive from the campground.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who value solitude and natural beauty over modern luxury or resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for photographers, wildlife watchers, and those seeking a quiet basecamp for exploring the northern Black Hills region. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want to escape the crowded tourist hubs found elsewhere in the state, the tranquility of Cook Lake provides a perfect off-grid experience.

DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE TO GET YOU HERE IF COMING FROM DEVILS TOWER! Set a waypoint of Farrall, WY to get here correctly. If not, have fun visiting the cows on roads that are marked private in order to get to a road that does not even exist. The rec area itself is nice and all of the facilities are clean. Limited fresh water, but there is some near the entrance. Toilets are all vault style. Everything is done well.

Nice campground. Clean toilets. Couple of trails including one you can hop on right from the campground. Road from the Aladdin side is best. Follow USFS directions, not Google maps, from Sundance
