Black Hills/Roubaix Lake
Overview
Tucked away within the Black Hills National Forest, Roubaix Lake Campground offers a tranquil retreat for RVers looking to escape the more commercialized areas of South Dakota. Located south of the historic town of Deadwood, this destination provides a classic camping experience where the focus remains squarely on the natural landscape. Visitors are greeted by the scent of Ponderosa pines and the quiet rustle of the forest, creating a peaceful atmosphere that is hard to find in modern RV resorts.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,500 feet, the park is nestled along the shores of its namesake, Roubaix Lake. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense timber, offering plenty of shade and a sense of seclusion. While it feels worlds away, it is conveniently located near Highway 385, making it accessible for those exploring the northern Black Hills. The alpine scenery provides a stunning backdrop for morning coffee or evening walks along the water’s edge.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive forest service site, meaning it is ideal for those who enjoy dry camping. The park features gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Essential facilities provided for guests include:
- Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the loops
- Hand pumps for potable drinking water
- Access to a sandy swimming beach area
- A small boat launch for non-motorized watercraft
There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, so visitors should arrive with their tanks full and batteries charged to fully enjoy the off-grid experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers will appreciate the opportunity for trout fishing in the well-stocked lake, while hikers can explore various forest trails that weave through the area. Just a short drive north, the legendary town of Deadwood offers a glimpse into Gold Rush history with its historic Main Street and museums. For those who prefer outdoor recreation, the famous George S. Mickelson Trail is nearby, providing miles of scenic pathways for biking and walking through the heart of the hills.
Who This Park Is Best For
Roubaix Lake is the perfect fit for self-contained RVers who value solitude and natural beauty over modern luxuries. It is ideal for families looking to spend quality time outdoors without the distractions of digital life. If you prefer the rustic charm of a national forest setting and don't mind living off your tanks for a few days, this park offers one of the most authentic and serene experiences in the Black Hills region.

LOVE this lake. It's our second year coming here and will continue to do so. Great camp sites and beautiful little lake. Kids love going to the stream and catching fresh crawfish. Caught some beautiful rainbow trout for dinner.

This charming little campground is a hidden gem! The host in 2024 was exceptionally friendly and helpful. While some spots can be reserved, some of the best ones, like ours, are first come, first served. The campground is filled with trees, and the scent of pine is simply delightful. Generators can be run between 6 am and 10 pm, but despite several campers using theirs, the noise was never intrusive. I enjoyed the peaceful mornings running on my batteries before firing up my generator later in the day while I worked remotely.

Very nice atmosphere, clean. Lots of people so it must be popular.

We stayed at site 42D, and had great views of the open meadow (where we saw several deer), and an easy walk to the small lake. We originally had a different site reserved, but there was no flat spot to set up our large tent, so the camp host let us move to a "first come first serve" site. Our spot was perfect and quiet, though we noticed on the other side of the loop was access to a dirt road, and many ATV tours seemed to come through on both days we stayed. Otherwise, no complaints. There was a small trail to explore on the other side of the lake too, and a lot of wildflowers in June.
