Black Mesa

Overview

Black Mesa State Park offers a unique and rugged getaway in the far northwest corner of the Oklahoma Panhandle. Located near the small town of Kenton, this park serves as a gateway to the highest point in Oklahoma. Visitors are greeted by a landscape that transitions from the high plains to the Rocky Mountain foothills, featuring dramatic mesas and vast prairies. This destination is perfect for travelers who appreciate quiet solitude and the raw beauty of the American West.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Cimarron County, the park is nestled within a region where three states meet: Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado. The surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic rock formations and the shimmering waters of Lake Carl Etling. Because of its remote location far from major city lights, the area is renowned for having some of the darkest skies in the country, providing an unparalleled stargazing experience for overnight visitors.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides dedicated spaces for RVers, including several sites equipped with water and electric hookups. While the setting is rustic, the park offers essential comforts like modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station for convenience. Travelers can enjoy shaded picnic areas and a playground, while those interested in fishing will find easy access to boat ramps on the lake. The secluded atmosphere ensures a peaceful stay away from the typical crowds of larger state parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Black Mesa Nature Preserve, located just a short drive from the main campground. Here, hikers can tackle the trail to the summit to stand at 4,973 feet above sea level. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy birdwatching for golden eagles and scaled quail, or searching for prehistoric dinosaur tracks preserved in the sandstone nearby. The park also highlights its status as a premier destination for amateur astronomers through its exceptionally dark night skies.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for adventurous RVers who prefer natural wonders over luxury resort amenities. It is a haven for hikers, photographers, and anyone looking for a tranquil retreat into nature. If your travel style involves exploring off-the-beaten-path locations and witnessing breathtaking horizons, Black Mesa is a must-visit destination. It is best suited for those who enjoy self-contained camping and a slower pace of life under the wide Oklahoma sun.

Large area not alot of people. Plenty of hiking, wildlife was abundant. Feels very old times. Hiked the black mesa summit, good views and cool obelisk marking the highest point in Oklahoma.

Love the beauty of Black Mesa. Every evening we watch deer on the hills beside the campsites. Electric and water hookups. There is a lake you cannot see from the campsite but can drive to for fishing. Plenty of hiking and one of the best star gazing spots in the US.

Black Mesa Campground is a great place for family camping. It's clean, has restrooms and showers, and a friendly camp host to welcome you. There's even a small store that sells forgotten essentials. A playground is also located within the campground, making it a perfect spot for families.

Stunning views, nice clean park. Only complaint is lack of bathrooms in tent area. I would have appreciated a porta-John at the lake view camping area. Having to make the drive when nature calls was the only downfall.

The park with the highest point in Oklahoma. Wanted to go to that point but didn’t know it was a four mile trail so opted out of it. We did go to the dinosaur footprints and the three corners monument. It’s an interesting park in an interesting part of the state.
