Black Moshannon
Overview
Black Moshannon State Park covers over 3,300 acres atop the scenic Allegheny Plateau. It is uniquely named for its tea-colored lake, which derives its dark, obsidian-like hue from the natural tannins of the surrounding bogs and marshes. This state park offers a peaceful escape for RV travelers looking to immerse themselves in Pennsylvania’s rugged landscapes. The atmosphere remains quiet and serene, dominated by the rustling of hemlocks and the scenic water views near the shoreline.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from Philipsburg, PA, the park sits at a high elevation, creating a cooler climate that is perfect for summer camping. It is completely enveloped by the Moshannon State Forest, ensuring that visitors are surrounded by miles of protected wilderness. The drive to the park involves winding mountain roads that offer stunning vistas, though drivers should be mindful of the plateau elevation changes as they approach the main camping areas.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides a variety of sites, including many equipped with 30- or 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs. For guest convenience, the park maintains modern bathhouses with flushing toilets and warm showers, alongside a centrally located sanitary dump station. Beyond the campsites, the park offers a sandy swimming beach, multiple boat launches for electric-powered craft, and well-maintained picnic areas that overlook the dark, calm waters of the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Hiking is a major draw here, particularly the Moss-Hanne Trail, which transitions through diverse environments like pine plantations and open marshes. Anglers often visit to fish for bass and northern pike, while paddlers enjoy the calm, glass-like surface of the lake. If you need a break from the woods, the bustling atmosphere of State College and Penn State University is roughly 25 miles away, offering museums, sports venues, and expanded supply runs.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is a premier destination for nature photographers and birdwatchers eager to spot rare species in the unique bog habitat. It is a fantastic choice for families and couples seeking a quiet, nature-centric retreat rather than a commercial resort experience. Because of its remote feel and focus on conservation, it is best suited for RVers who appreciate rustic landscapes and outdoor exploration while being comfortable with a tranquil, unplugged environment.

This was a gem of a park we were wonderfully surprised. The camping was great and trails were plentiful, well marked, and beautiful. The bog trail was one of my favorites and is an easy short walk. The camp store was a delight as well. They did not have much stuff to buy but that was okay with us. What made this camp store unique was the seating inside along with the little grill restaurant with a cook who must be one of the best cooks in the area! He made us a delicious lunch! We had a wonderful time there. The staff where delightfully knowledgeable and friendly! The bonus, the bathrooms were the best bathrooms I've ever experienced at a state park. We will definitely be visiting the Black Moshannon State Park again!

Early spring trip, stayed in site 12. Very spacious and private site. Was fairly level and easy to back the camper into. Bathroom was clean and had plenty of hot water to shower. Numerous trails to hike and a lake for swimming. Did a ranger led night hike in which was awesome! They had UV lights for us to use and showed us how different plans and insects glow! Stopped at the little cafe/gift shop for ice cream and they even gave my dogs a little pup cup of vanilla.

Beautiful park. Good site options for staying overnight. Fun day use areas for water activities and picnics as well as a playground. Little to no cell service but park office brochure gave directions for where it’s likely to be found. Bathrooms were clean.

The camp store, Sleepy Hollow Outpost, has the cutest souvenirs and really great food and ice cream. The kayaking is pretty. Campground is nice!

First time camping here. Came for a 3 night long weekend for Women in the Wilds program Saturday. Very professionally ran program. Campground was great with spacious electric site #43, hot showers, great hand dipped ice cream at the camp store, kayaked the gorgeous lake. *Note: cell service is great at cabin #20 which has 2 large parking lots but not enough room to turn around with a camper attached. Some got service at the water tower in the campground (1 bar) most didn't
