Black River/Pigeon Creek

Overview

Pigeon Creek Campground offers a quiet, wooded retreat within the expansive Black River State Forest. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this location focuses on a primitive camping experience that allows visitors to truly reconnect with the glacial landscapes of central Wisconsin. With its close proximity to the water and a dense forest canopy, it serves as a peaceful base for those who value privacy and nature over modern luxuries. This destination provides an authentic northern woods atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find for modern RVers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a short drive from the town of Black River Falls, the park is nestled deeply among towering pines and jack oaks. The standout geographic feature is the Pigeon Creek Flowage, a serene and shallow body of water that borders the camping area, providing a mirror-like surface for morning sunrises. The surrounding terrain is part of the ancient glacial Lake Wisconsin bed, characterized by sandy soils and unique local flora that changes beautifully with the passing seasons, making it a scenic stop for any traveler.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic destination, the park provides essential facilities for self-contained travelers looking for a break from the grid. The layout is designed to maximize the natural beauty of the forest rather than providing modern utility hookups. Essential features include:

  • Vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water stations located conveniently throughout the camping loops.
  • 38 individual campsites with spacious, shaded layouts that offer excellent privacy from neighbors.
  • A well-maintained sandy swimming beach and grassy picnic area perfect for warm summer afternoons.

While the sites lack electricity, they are generally level and can accommodate most RV lengths, making it a great spot for those prepared to dry camp.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to the Black River State Forest trail system, which is renowned for its extensive hiking, mountain biking, and ATV routes. Fishing is another popular pastime on the flowage, where anglers often catch panfish and bass from the shore or small watercraft. For those willing to explore a bit further, the nearby Castle Mound Pine Forest provides breathtaking views from its sandstone buttes and historical observation tower, offering a bird's eye view of the entire county.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal choice for boondockers and nature lovers who prefer the quiet rustle of leaves over the hum of a crowded commercial park. It is perfectly suited for families looking for a traditional lakeside camping experience and outdoor adventurers who want a rugged home base for exploring the state's forest trails. If you appreciate a dark night sky, the crackle of a campfire, and a slower pace of life, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

The campground is great! Very beautiful and well maintained. The reason for a 3, is the price for out of state visitors is 18 dollars a day in addition to the campground fees. For a primitive campsite, $51.00 total for one night. This is double the price for the surrounding states.

Nice spot for hiking, some excellent rock formations at Castle Mound and a tower for viewing the Black River State Forest Some alternate routes with varying elevations, and options for some nice vistas Nice looking campground, never stayed here but seems like a decent spot to set up camp

We booked the handicap site, it was a pull through but not really a pull through with an OVERSIZED fire pit was placed on the black top of the "pull through" We were able to get our travel trailer set up, had room for our truck and clam screen room. There are TONS AND TONS OF MOSQUITOS! We used off fogger spray and had to get more to keep it somewhat comfortable to have a fire or cook outside on the OVERSIZED fire pit! As we looked at other sites, if we come back we would choose those as the wooded area and weeds were cut back. Which I am sure helped with the horrendous mosquitos!! Plan of having a lot of mosquito spray!
