Bleriot Ferry
Overview
Bleriot Ferry Provincial Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape for travelers looking to experience the authentic beauty of the Alberta Badlands. Unlike the busy commercial hubs in town, this park provides a quiet riverside retreat along the banks of the Red Deer River. It is a primitive camping destination that emphasizes a connection with nature, allowing visitors to enjoy the peaceful sounds of the water and the unique geological formations that define the region. The park is an essential stop for those following the historic Dinosaur Trail loop.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 23 kilometers northwest of Drumheller, the park is nestled within the dramatic Red Deer River Valley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by striking coulees and striated canyon walls. One of the most unique aspects of this location is its proximity to the historic cable ferry, which has been transporting vehicles across the river since 1913. This location offers a perfect vantage point for photographers and nature lovers who want to capture the rugged spirit of the Canadian Badlands away from the main tourist crowds.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is designed for those who appreciate a rustic camping experience. As a Provincial Recreation Area, it features unserviced sites that are best suited for self-contained RVs or tents. Available amenities include basic pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings for evening gatherings. While you will not find electricity or water hookups, the park offers direct river access, making it a popular spot for launching canoes or kayaks. The sites are shaded by mature cottonwood trees, providing a cool reprieve from the summer sun.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Bleriot Ferry crossing, a charming and free service that links the two sides of the Dinosaur Trail. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum to learn about the prehistoric giants that once roamed this area. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy fishing in the Red Deer River or hiking through the nearby canyons. The area is also excellent for wildlife viewing, where it is common to spot mule deer and various bird species indigenous to the prairie landscape.
Who This Park Is Best For
Bleriot Ferry is ideal for independent boondockers and RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. If you enjoy a minimalist lifestyle and prefer the sound of rustling leaves to the hum of a crowded resort, this is the place for you. It is a fantastic choice for nature photographers and history buffs who want easy access to the ferry and the scenic Dinosaur Trail. Families looking for a traditional, unplugged camping trip will find the riverside setting perfect for a weekend of exploration.

Shortest ferry I have ever been on, no waiting, and the crossing was under 2 minutes! It was also the shallowest ferry ride I have been on having only 1 foot of clearance from ferry bottom to riverbed. No fee ferry.

This ferry is very short and fun for kids. It's functional obviously to get across. It's mostly like a flat piece your car drives on and I think it can fit 4 cars? The whole trip takes 5 minutes maybe even less.

Unfortunately, when we came here, it was closed, but it was still a nice visit. There is a campground nearby, which is nice. We will come here again next year when it is open again.

VERY cool!!!! You do not have to come this way but it is a nice change to slow down and enjoy. The guy running the ferry was really nice talking to everyone and happy to share about the area. Great drive down into the valley and back out.

We came at this ferry at around 2150hrs and it was pitch dark, Terry the Guardian Ferry was amazing. He kinda guide us and told us some amazing experiences he had. Just like the other day, he said about 1k has crossed the river that is about 3ft deep only from 8 am till 3 pm. He also does the turning on and off of the pulley system of both ends. Thanks Terry for showing us and entertaining us on that short ride, you’re doing great and we appreciate what you do.
