Blue Mesa Outpost

Overview

Blue Mesa Outpost offers a tranquil escape situated high above the Blue Mesa Reservoir, providing guests with some of the most stunning views in the Gunnison area. This family-owned and operated park is designed specifically for travelers who appreciate nature and quiet evenings under the stars. It serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the vast Curecanti National Recreation Area and the rugged beauty of Western Colorado's high-desert landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Conveniently located along Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose, the park sits on a scenic bluff overlooking the water. The surrounding geography is defined by expansive mountain vistas and the deep blue hues of Colorado's largest body of water. Because of its unique elevation, the park experiences cool summer breezes and crisp evenings, making it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the heat while enjoying scenic high-altitude sunsets and clear night skies.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a variety of lodging options, including level RV sites featuring full hookups with 30-amp and 50-amp service. Travelers will find well-maintained facilities that prioritize comfort. Key park features include:

  • Full hookup sites with both back-in and pull-thru options
  • Clean, modern restrooms and guest shower facilities
  • On-site laundry room and reliable Wi-Fi access

Most sites are thoughtfully positioned to maximize the view of the reservoir, and the park offers enough space to accommodate a wide range of rig sizes comfortably.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

World-class outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park located just a short, scenic drive to the west. Visitors can spend their days boating or fishing for lake trout and Kokanee salmon at the nearby Elk Creek Marina. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the surrounding area offers miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing opportunities, and easy access to the charming shops and local eateries in downtown Gunnison.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and National Park travelers who want a peaceful, scenic environment rather than a crowded resort. It is particularly well-suited for those who enjoy water sports, photography, or fishing but prefer to return to a quiet campsite at the end of the day. If you value breathtaking natural beauty and a friendly, small-park atmosphere, this is the perfect destination for your next Colorado RV road trip.

I had an amazing time at Blue Mesa Outpost! I was out here for a working-vacation. The owner, Steve, was super accomidating and helpful with anything that happened to arise, and I guarantee you stuff came up on my end with scheduling and hours. The cabins are clean and cozy. This place even has a playground and a small blockbuster going, with free video rentals to help my todder be not so bored being out of his element at home. Thank you Blue Mesa Outpost for the lovely trip!

The cabin was better than I expected. The view from the front porch was so beautiful. The entire place was very inviting. The host showed me where an access road was too a beach. The fishing from there was great. Having a dog friendly resort allowed my wife and I to bring our dogs and enjoy the reservoir and Gunnison together. Coming back from fishing one day a strange truck was parked in front of our cabin, but the host Steve was there as well. Having that kind of presence allows peace of mind to leave a cooler on the porch and fishing gear out to dry. I definitely recommend booking here. I will be back this season Edit. My wife and I returned here again. Once again we were not disappointed. The dog friendly environment allowed us to bring our dogs. The easy access to multiple beaches for fishing allowed me time to truly relax. The owner Steve made a couple recommendations about places to eat in Gunnison and where to fish. He did not disappoint, the food and fishing were excellent. It's nice staying in such reasonable and complete cabins that are so dog friendly. I went up to the game room and played some pool and area 51(one of the best arcade games ever made). This is definitely on my our list of destinations that stick out.

My wife and I are from Colorado and recently moved to SC. Nearly every year my family, along with my siblings, their spouses and kids, and my parents, rent cabins for a weekend at Blue Mesa Outpost. I've been missing home since moving to SC and could not have gone to a more perfect place to spend time with family. The views are absolutely astonishing. You have a perfect view of the lake, and the sunsets over the water are something out of a postcard. The cabins are cozy, clean, and have everything you may need for your stay. What makes Blue Mesa Outpost truly special, though, is the atmosphere—it feels both peaceful and welcoming, like a hidden gem that you want to share with your loved ones but also keep to yourself. Whether you’re sitting by the fire, grilling outside, spending time with family or just taking in the fresh mountain air, every moment feels restorative. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive, going out of their way to make sure your stay is memorable. Steve, the owner, will ensure you have what you need to make your stay as comfortable as can be.It really does feel like home away from home. After moving so far from Colorado, finding a place that reminded me of the family traditions and beauty I grew up with was priceless. We’ll definitely be back again and again.

The location of these cabins is incredible! Waking up to the breathtaking view of Blue Mesa Reservoir is an unforgettable experience. It's conveniently located, with a short drive to the water and easy access to Gunnison. However, the one major downside is the comfort of the beds and no AC in the cabins. The beds are extremely firm, making it difficult to get a good night's sleep. If you prioritize a stunning view over sleeping comfort, this place might be worth it, but be prepared for a less-than-comfortable sleeping situation.

Steve, the owner, was very friendly, helpful and genuinely concerned about our comfort and enjoyment while there! Will definitely return! We stayed in one of the cabins that overlooked the reservoir; beautiful view! The cabin was nicely furnished and very clean.
