Blue Mound

Overview

Blue Mound State Park sits atop the highest point in Southern Wisconsin, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Driftless Area. This state-managed park provides a natural, wooded setting for RVers who value scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a favorite for those seeking a **quiet retreat into nature** while remaining close to the Madison metropolitan area. The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems and serves as a peaceful haven for travelers looking to explore the natural beauty of the Midwest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the village of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, the park is famous for its unique geological features and its position on a high plateau. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and deep valleys, characteristic of the **unglaciated Driftless region**. Visitors can climb two **observation towers** located within the park that offer views stretching for miles toward the Wisconsin River valley and the Baraboo Range. This elevated location provides a cooler, breezier environment during the summer months compared to the lower valleys.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers various sites suitable for RVs, though travelers should note that the park primarily provides **electric-only hookups** rather than full service. One of the most distinctive features of this destination is its large **outdoor swimming pool**, which is a rare find in a state park system. Park features include:

  • **Modern shower facilities** and clean restrooms
  • Access to a sanitary dump station
  • Two large observation towers for scenic views
  • A dedicated **nature center** with educational programs

The wooded sites offer a high level of privacy and a genuine forest camping experience for motorhomes and travel trailers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the **Military Ridge State Trail**, which is perfect for long-distance biking and hiking. For a subterranean adventure, the famous **Cave of the Mounds**, a National Natural Landmark, is located just minutes away and offers guided tours of stunning limestone formations. Additionally, the nearby village of Mount Horeb provides charming shops and local eateries with a distinct Scandinavian influence, making it a great afternoon stop for those staying at the park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for **nature lovers and active families** who enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and swimming in a scenic environment. It is particularly suited for RVers who prefer a **rustic, state park atmosphere** with plenty of space between sites rather than a packed commercial resort. If you enjoy quiet evenings under a heavy forest canopy and active days exploring miles of trails, Blue Mound State Park offers an authentic Wisconsin outdoor experience that is hard to match.

This park offers a lot! Hiking trails, playground, two towers with great views and an additional viewing area with a unique winding walkway, a very nice swimming pool, mountain biking trail, rocks, flowers, and wildlife. This place has it all! There is a lot of parking here in several areas. Quite a few restrooms. Lots of tables and grills. Several shelters. This is a great place to spend a day or a weekend. Can't go wrong visiting here, I highly recommend it! Be sure to check out Cave of the Mounds when in the area, especially if you've never been. It's an incredibly unique experience, and one of my favorite places in the state!

We hosted our wedding here! Used the Amphitheater for our ceremony and the Friends Shelter for our reception. It was the most beautiful day on the mound. The DNR staff were wonderful to work with, accommodating several needs we had both before and day after the event. Many of our guests commented that it was the best wedding they had ever been to, and the location and amenities had a lot to do with it! Blue Mound will always have a special place in our hearts!

Beautiful state park. The entrance office is air conditioned with very clean bathrooms and lots of info & pamphlets. We went there for the observation tower which did not disappoint. I had no idea before going that there was a splash pad and pool! Very cool

Stopped here during our road trip on the way to Missouri! We got to climb the tower and it was amazing! Definitely a good stop to get out and stretch and have a good time! Highly recommend! And super cheap too!

This is a great park. Plenty of rugged trails to really get your nature on. If you go in the Spring, make sure to wear waterproof shoes or boots. The trails get mighty muddy, no choice but to slog through at some points.
