Blue Ridge Pkwy/Peaks Of Otter

Overview

The Peaks of Otter Campground offers a quintessential Blue Ridge Parkway experience, situated at milepost 86. Tucked into the lush forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this destination provides a high-altitude escape for RVers seeking peace and quiet. Unlike commercial resorts, this National Park Service facility emphasizes the natural beauty of the Bedford, Virginia area. It serves as a historic stopover where the cooling mountain breezes and the rustling leaves create a serene backdrop for your outdoor adventure. The elevation here provides a welcome respite from the summer heat found in the lower valleys.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled between three iconic peaks: Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill. Its proximity to Abbott Lake allows for stunning reflections of the mountain silhouettes during sunrise and sunset. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense hardwood forests and meadows that come alive with wildflowers in the spring and vibrant foliage in the autumn. Being located directly on the Blue Ridge Parkway, visitors have immediate access to one of the most scenic driving routes in the United States, offering breathtaking overlooks just minutes from your campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional mountain facility, this park caters to those who appreciate a rustic camping experience. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites, making it an ideal spot for self-contained RVs or those looking to dry camp. The park provides paved pads, fire rings, and picnic tables at every location to facilitate a classic outdoor lifestyle. While hookups are absent, the campground offers access to flush toilets and shared water faucets. A dump station is also conveniently located nearby to handle essential maintenance needs during your stay.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within walking distance. The hike up Sharp Top Mountain is a local favorite, providing a 360-degree view of the Virginia Piedmont from its rocky summit. Jim was a great campground host! Sites and bathrooms were very clean. No cell service but you can drive a few mins down the road to get gps and stuff going. Beautiful spot to camp. 10/10 would come back here!

I recently enjoyed a fantastic 7 day stay at the Peaks of Otter campground. The RV side of the CG fit my travel van needs perfectly and the lady ranger was amazingly helpful as well as professional. My hat's off to her and the rest of the team for maintaining the facility in tip top shape. Campground area details: The trails are well maintained, the lake, picnic and display areas are first rate. Bear in mind that this facility is similar in amenities to most all of the Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds. There isn't any electricity or water currently at the sites and the RV pads for parking are better suited for campers under 25' or so. However, there are some pull through sites for longer rigs. The bathrooms have flush toilets, sinks, hand soap dispensers and paper towels. There is an RV dump station with fresh water hook up and dumpsters are located near the exit. There isn't any carriers cell service that I'm aware of but there is wifi at the restaurant and maybe the camp store. A short one mile drive north out of the CG on the Parkway and I had 4 and 5G Verizon cell service. The shuttle ride to Sharp Top summit is unique and quiet fun. I chose to take the 1.5 mile hike back down. Take note that while on that trail a fellow hiker commented she'd seen a mother bear with three cubs so the CG warning signs to properly stow your food is warranted. In short, this is true camping at it's best, not glamping. Come here to clear your head, step away from the pressures of everyday life and live in the moment. One disclaimer: my campsite was absolutely ideal for me so I can't share the number or you might reserve it, sorry. Happy trails!

Really nice national park campground. The camp host, it was very pleasant, friendly and helpful. For some reason, they're asking me questions about the rooms like it was a motel but it's not it's a campground

We left a dirty pan in our campsite (It was still hot from cooking) along with our coolers and a pack of wet wipes while we went fishing. When we got back there was a sign on our site saying our items had been confiscated and needed to be picked up due to the bears in the area. I can understand to a certain degree, but still I think that was too much. The next day my son needed to use the bathroom. When we came back from the bath house, Karen the park ranger was in our site, again, and asked if it was our site. When I told her it was, she said she was going to inform law enforcement that we left similar items out, until I explained to her I had only taken my son to the bath house. Karen was on a power trip and we will never stay there again.

A great location: close to 3 peaks for a good hiking opportunity, and it's located about 10 minutes to Bedford. We visited during a supposedly busy June's weekend, but it was not crowded at all. There are plenty of FF sites and reservable ones, and many were vacant. Have restroomes (non-electric), and the campground overall is clean and not too noisy despite of being closed to highway. Only thing I'd wish it was there was a shower, but unfortunately you have to drive to Bedford's YMCA facility for a small fee (
