Blue Ridge Pkwy/Roanoke Mountain

Overview

The Blue Ridge Pkwy/Roanoke Mountain area offers a classic National Park Service experience just south of the city of Roanoke. Situated at Milepost 120, this destination serves as a tranquil gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Travelers often visit this section of the parkway for its easy access to scenic overlooks and deep immersion in the hardwood forests of Virginia. It provides a peaceful retreat that captures the essence of primitive mountain camping while remaining remarkably close to modern city conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles from the city center, the park sits at an elevation that provides a cooler climate during the humid summer months. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Roanoke Mountain Loop Road, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Roanoke Valley from several designated pull-offs. This location is unique because it bridges the gap between the rugged wilderness of the Appalachian trail system and the urban amenities of one of Virginia's most vibrant mountain communities.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional NPS site, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than resort-style luxury. The park features paved parking pads and central water spigots for guest use. While there are no individual water or electric hookups available, the park provides essential facilities like flush toilets and a seasonal dump station for waste management. Each site is typically equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, making it an ideal spot for authentic campfire cooking and evening relaxation under a dense canopy of trees.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the famous Mill Mountain Star, which is the world's largest freestanding man-made illuminated star. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Chestnut Ridge Trail, a moderate loop perfect for hiking and bird watching. For those interested in local culture, downtown Roanoke offers the Virginia Museum of Transportation and a variety of local breweries and farm-to-table restaurants, all within ten miles of the parkway entrance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, wooded atmosphere over a commercial park experience. Because of the winding parkway roads and specific site dimensions, it is ideal for camper vans and mid-sized trailers looking for a rustic stopover. It is a perfect match for travelers who want to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature while staying near the historic charm and scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

No cars allowed so I took my ebike up. Have to go around the road closed sign. Saw a few people walking along it. Beautiful wide view that includes Salem, Roanoke, and Vinton.

Proposed to my girl here, she said yes even though I dropped the ring, so I figure it’s a pretty good spot. The first overlook has a great sunset view and the second view is by the parking lot which has an excellent sunrise view. You can hike up the road even though it has been closed for some time. You can park by the nearby overlook or right by where the road starts.
