Blue Ridge Pkwy/Rocky Knob
Overview
Rocky Knob Campground offers a quintessential Blue Ridge Parkway experience located just outside of Floyd, VA. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, this National Park Service facility provides a rustic retreat for those seeking to disconnect from the modern world. It is celebrated for its historic stone structures and immediate access to some of the parkway's most dramatic landscapes. While it lacks the luxury of a modern commercial resort, its true charm lies in its simplicity and the cooling mountain breezes that persist even during the height of mid-summer.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is positioned at Milepost 167, perfectly situated in the plateau region of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The surrounding environment is defined by rolling green hills, dense hardwood forests, and the famous Rock Castle Gorge. The nearby town of Floyd provides a unique cultural hub where travelers can experience authentic Appalachian music and local craftsmanship within a short drive from their campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional federal campground, Rocky Knob focuses on the essentials rather than high-tech amenities. RVers will find sites equipped with sturdy fire rings and picnic tables, though it is important to note there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. The park provides shared access to flush toilets and seasonal potable water stations. A dump station is available on-site to assist self-contained units. The sites are generally wooded and private, accommodating smaller motorhomes and travel trailers comfortably, though drivers of very large rigs should navigate the loops with caution.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Rock Castle Gorge Trail, a strenuous but rewarding 10.8-mile loop known for its diverse plant life and historic home ruins. Just a few miles south at Milepost 176, travelers can visit Mabry Mill, one of the most photographed spots on the entire Parkway, to see live demonstrations of mountain life and milling. In Floyd, the Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store offers a lively glimpse into the region’s deep-rooted musical heritage and flatfoot dancing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize tranquility and natural beauty over modern conveniences. It is a fantastic choice for photographers, hikers, and those looking to escape the summer heat common in the lower elevations. We always love camping at Rocky Knob. Don't mind the rustic camping, great camp host, most sites will accommodate. You pick out your site, drive out & come back in the opposite direction. Make reservations, not a problem. Bathrooms are clean. We usually come here a couple times a year. Blue ridge is beautiful anytime of the year.

Great place to experience the mother nature. Close to the sky so you can see lots of stars. Beautiful red and yellow leaves of trees on fall. No place to take shower but it deserves to stay couple of days.

This is a old school RV spot. The location is really off the beaten path if you not on the Blue Ridge. The sites really need some TLC but it is located among the old growth trees and it is super quiet.

We love Rocky Knob because it has backpack camping. On the good side the camp sites are close to a very nice creek. Great water supply & amazing to fall asleep to. The draw back- it's only about a half mile hike in & the sites are pretty close together. Blue Ridge has amazing hiking, but not for the casual hiker. Lots of steep uphill - or down!

I thought this was a really cool campground. It has a rolling topography which is more interesting than a flat campground. My tent site was pretty good size and backed up to the woods. There were stone steps from the parking paddock down to the level tent site, picnic table and fire pit. Bathrooms were nice. Ranger was very polite and professional. Location on Blue Ridge Parkway was great. Stop at Tuggles Restaurant just north of the campground to get your food, ice and drinks before going into the campground. Hope to return.
