Bluestone
Overview
Bluestone State Park offers a serene getaway nestled within the rugged mountains of southern West Virginia. Known primarily for the expansive Bluestone Lake, this park serves as a hub for travelers seeking a mix of water-based recreation and forest solitude. The atmosphere is decidedly rustic and peaceful, providing a classic state park experience that prioritizes natural beauty over modern commercial flair. It is a place where the pace of life slows down significantly.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just outside the historic town of Hinton, the park is perched near the scenic confluence of the New and Bluestone Rivers. The surrounding landscape is defined by heavily timbered ridges and deep valleys, offering a dramatic backdrop for any RV trip. Because it is located within the broader New River Gorge region, visitors are treated to some of the most iconic Appalachian scenery available, including proximity to the stunning Bluestone River Gorge.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides several camping areas, with the Meador Campground being the most popular choice for RVers. Key features available to guests include:
- Electric and water hookups at many designated campsites.
- A seasonal outdoor swimming pool and modern bathhouses.
- On-site boat launches and accessible marina services.
These facilities ensure that while the setting feels wild, guests have the essential amenities required for a comfortable mountain stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the lake, visitors should not miss Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall on the New River, located just a short drive away. The historic district of Hinton offers a charming glimpse into the region’s railroad history and local culture. For hikers, the park connects to various trails, including those leading into the Bluestone National Scenic River area. Nearby Pipestem Resort State Park offers additional recreation like golf and aerial tramway rides.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is a perfect fit for dedicated anglers and boaters who want direct access to one of the state's premier fishing spots. It also appeals to families who appreciate a traditional camping environment where kids can ride bikes and explore the woods. If you are an RV traveler who prefers scenic mountain vistas and quiet nights over the bustle of a luxury resort, Bluestone provides the authentic West Virginia outdoor experience you seek.

I only stopped on my way through and for some photos at the Almost Heaven/West Virginia swing but it looked like a beautiful lake and a great place to camp!

We did the Overlook Trail. Not very well maintained (multiple trees and heavy brush fallen over trail) and the view is just OK once you reach the end. Walking along the ridge of the mountain towards the end is cool. Decent elevation change so physically good for you. Obviously not a well traveled route by the growth, but we were the only ones on the trail so relaxing hike.

Beautiful state park, has hiking for all different levels of hikers. We did the eagle trail. Eagle point trail is very challenging no recommended for children and pets, a beautiful view is found a the end. Do Not hike this trail if you are not a experience fit hiker.

Bluestone State Park is an amazing place to stay. Beautiful views, relaxing atmosphere, great wildlife, pool staff and pool were great, office staff very helpful and professional the facility staff is outstanding and as a whole the staff is absolutely amazing and accommodating. We arrived to find out the refrigerator was not staying cold enough, we called the office within 10 minutes 2 very nice gentlemen arrived checked it and told us they would be right back with a replacement. They were back within 10 minutes and took out the old and brought in the replacement in a very short amount of time. Called for trash pickup and a nice gentleman arrived within minutes and took our trash. Highly recommend this park if you are looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to stay that has amazing staff and wonderful accommodations. There is also so much to do in West Virginia! You can relax at your cabin or at the pool or do some traveling around this part of this beautiful state. Highly recommend a West Virginia visit and a stay at Bluestone State Park is a great place to start making great memories of your visit!

Went on a short hike/walk after the swing to stretch our legs during our long roadtrip. It was perfect for our young kids as it was an easy little walk. The older ones really enjoyed checking out the creek too.
