Overview
Boise/Yellow Pine provides a true backcountry experience for those looking to escape the typical resort scene and embrace the wild. Nestled in the heart of the Idaho wilderness, this destination is defined by its rugged mountain scenery and quiet atmosphere. Visitors here trade high-speed internet and city noise for clear night skies and the soothing sounds of nearby water, making it an ideal base for exploring the untamed beauty of central Idaho. It offers a unique opportunity to experience authentic mountain living in a remote village setting.
Location & Surroundings
Located at the end of scenic yet challenging backcountry roads, the park sits within the vast Payette National Forest. The drive into Yellow Pine is an adventure itself, often requiring travel over gravel roads that wind through deep canyons and high mountain passes. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense pine forests and the East Fork of the South Fork Salmon River, offering a secluded mountain retreat far removed from the urban sprawl of Boise or the busy tourist docks of McCall.
Amenities & Park Features
While amenities in this remote area are more simplified than urban parks, visitors will find essential comforts designed for the self-contained traveler. The park offers spacious RV sites that accommodate various rig sizes, providing a flat surface to set up camp amidst the trees. You can expect traditional features like communal fire pits and picnic tables, which encourage a social environment among fellow backcountry enthusiasts. The lack of cell service and light pollution are considered features here, allowing for total immersion in the environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and those who love high-altitude recreation. Anglers frequently visit to test their skills in the pristine trout streams that crisscross the valley. Aviation fans will appreciate proximity to the famous Johnson Creek Airstrip, a world-renowned hub for backcountry pilots. If you visit in August, the town comes alive with the Yellow Pine Harmonica Festival, a unique cultural event. Additionally, miles of trails are available for hiking, mountain biking, and UTV exploration through historic mining districts.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is perfectly suited for off-grid adventurers and those who travel with a sense of self-sufficiency. It is the destination of choice for travelers looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the natural world. Because of the remote location and the nature of the access roads, it is best for experienced RVers who are comfortable navigating mountain terrain and who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a luxury resort experience.

We love trips to Yellow Pine. Stayed here for a week a couple years ago. This campground is awesome, and we can't wait to stay here again when we get an opportunity.

Camped here with an ex girlfriend in 1999 for the harmonica festival. It was a really cool experience then, and I’m sure it still is today. Almost seems like yesterday. Great memories.
