Bow River

Overview

Bow River Campground offers a serene escape nestled within the heart of the Bow Valley Provincial Park. Located just a short drive from the bustling town of Canmore, this campground provides a balance between accessible wilderness and proximity to urban conveniences. Travelers often choose this spot for its stunning mountain views and its position along the turquoise waters of the Bow River, making it a staple for those exploring the Canadian Rockies.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the south bank of the river, the park is framed by the dramatic peaks of the Fairholme Range. The location is technically just east of Canmore, providing easy access via the Trans-Canada Highway. While the highway proximity offers convenience for larger rigs, the sound of the rushing water helps maintain a natural atmosphere. Guests are surrounded by dense forests of spruce and pine, creating a private feel for many of the individual campsites.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park facility, the amenities lean toward a traditional camping experience. The campground features power-only hookups at select sites, while others remain unserviced for a more rustic stay. Standard features include heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no on-site showers, the park provides well-maintained pit toilets and communal water pumps. It is a dry-environment park, so visitors should plan accordingly for their water needs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the immediate access to the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail, a paved pathway perfect for cycling between Canmore and Banff. Anglers will appreciate the world-class trout fishing found right on the riverbanks. For those looking to hike, the nearby Grassi Lakes Trail offers manageable terrain with rewarding views. The vibrant shops and local breweries of downtown Canmore are only ten minutes away, offering a perfect afternoon diversion.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who value scenery over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for outdoor enthusiasts who plan to spend their days hiking or paddling and simply need a quiet, scenic base camp. Because of its location, it serves as an excellent alternative to the often-crowded campgrounds inside Banff National Park, making it perfect for mountain explorers seeking a more laid-back pace.

Conveniently located between Banff NP and Kanaskis Conservation area this campground is a perfect base for outdoors adventures! Our camp host Laura was the most generous, kind and helpful person, suggesting places to visit and ensuring we were comfortable during our stay. It’s evident she cares about the location, keeping ammenities clean and modern. Highly recommended!

The location is good, close to Canmore. But nearby the highway, noises all day long. The staff is not very nice, trading people differently, rude. Do not know why the park hire them? We came to the campground without water, asking the male staff where can we filling up the water, he allowed us to use the hose by the washroom, after few minutes, the female staff came, ask us to leave and shut off the water. Saying that this campground does not provide water;however, around 8:30pm, she just let other people to fill up the water! In front of me. Feel so awful!

We stayed for one night and loved it here. By chance, in my opinion, we got the best spot available. We stayed in number 24, which had an amazing view of the water and some privacy with the trees around us. We also got some firewood from the staff, who were really friendly. There was some road noise, so if you are a light sleeper it might not be the best campground to stay, but if you can deal with that I would definitely recommend

Listen, Canmore is beautiful. There is no doubt. The campground is nice BUT there were 2 things that I struggled with: 1. The tenting site we were in has a weird gravel/pave floor. Putting the tent's stake pegs all the way down was impossible. You NEED a hammer (our fault not to bring one). BUT at least it is nicely flat and no mud during rain. So, if you have some blankets underneath, it is fine. 2. This is what really made my nights uncomfortable: you are a few trees away from the highway. All the time you are listening to cars passing by. The sounds of nature were muted. If you are being kids, there are no playgrounds in the area. Also, you need a car to move to any hiking paths.

Nice, easily accessible campground. This campground actually surprised me. Sites were nice and big with enough trees and bushes in-between to be pretty private. Right next to the river with a couple of spots you can go hangout next to it if you didn't book your spot right next to the river. Super close to town - being a 7min drive. My biggest complaint is the noise from the highway but that's to be expected with a campground being right next to it.. !
