Bowman Lake
Overview
Bowman Lake State Park offers a serene escape into what is often called the Land of the Hidden Hills. Located in the rolling Chenango County countryside, this 653-acre park is centered around a picturesque 35-acre lake. It is a destination defined by its tranquil atmosphere and dense evergreen and hardwood forests, providing a rustic retreat for RVers looking to disconnect from the noise of modern life. The park maintains a sense of isolation that is increasingly rare for modern travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the historic village of Oxford, NY, the park is tucked away from major highways, ensuring a quiet stay. The surrounding landscape features deep valleys and lush woodlands that change beautifully with the seasons, from vibrant spring greens to brilliant autumn golds. Its remote location makes it an ideal spot for stargazing and wildlife viewing, as the lack of light pollution reveals a brilliant night sky over the central New York terrain.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides over 150 sites, many of which accommodate RVs of various sizes. Essential facilities and features for travelers include:
- Spacious sites with electric hookup options available for many units.
- A centrally located RV dump station and multiple water filling stations.
- Access to a sandy swimming beach and a peaceful non-motorized boat launch.
These amenities ensure that while the setting is rustic, travelers have access to the necessary comforts for an extended stay in the woods.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors can explore over 13 miles of scenic hiking trails that wind through the park and connect to the extensive Finger Lakes Trail system. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the lake's population of trout, which are stocked annually. Just a short drive away, the village of Oxford offers historic charm and local dining, while the nearby town of Norwich features unique stops like the Northeast Classic Car Museum for those seeking a bit of local culture and history.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is a perfect match for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a quiet, wooded setting over a high-activity commercial resort. Because the lake is restricted to non-motorized or electric boats, it is especially popular with kayakers and paddleboarders seeking calm waters. It serves as a wonderful base camp for those looking to explore the rustic beauty and hidden gems of the Southern Tier in a relaxed, slow-paced environment.

Nice fall day. Just starting to get some color. We had a nice hike. There were a few people fishing and one person had gone for swim.

Had a fun time camping. Sites are pretty private yet close to pretty much everything. My daughter enjoyed the playground and lake. We did book to be near a playground at our campsite as we had 2 small children but the "playground" was only a swing near the bathrooms. We noticed that most of the "playgrounds" near the camp sites are just swing sets the main playground is near the lake/swimming area so if thats what you are looking for try to be closer to the swim area then for camping. Otherwise we had a fun 4 days and no issues other then the playground and snack bar was closed on the weekend because of low staffing.

Bowman State Park is hands-down one of our favorite places to camp. Every time we go, it feels like the perfect mix of peace, adventure, and beauty all rolled into one. The campsites are well laid out, spacious, and give you just the right balance of privacy and community. Whether you’re pitching a tent or setting up something bigger, it never feels cramped. The park is kept really clean, and you can tell the staff takes pride in maintaining the grounds. What really makes Bowman shine is the scenery. From the trails that wind through beautiful forests, to the quiet lake that’s perfect for fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water — it’s the kind of place where you instantly feel unplugged from the chaos of everyday life. Sunsets here are something else too… it’s like the whole park slows down and gives you a show. We’ve camped at a lot of different places, but Bowman State Park keeps us coming back. It’s family-friendly, nature-rich, and has that “hidden gem” feel without being impossible to get to. If you love camping, hiking, or just want a place to recharge in the outdoors, this is it. Can’t recommend it enough — we’ll be coming back again and again.
