Overview

Brendan T. Byrne State Forest offers a peaceful retreat within the sprawling New Jersey Pine Barrens. Located in New Lisbon, this expansive state forest encompasses over 37,000 acres of protected land, providing a serene backdrop for RV travelers. Unlike busy commercial parks, this destination focuses on the preservation of the natural environment, offering a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the forest and the rustling pines take center stage for a truly immersive nature experience.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the heart of the Pinelands National Reserve, a unique ecosystem characterized by sandy soil and dense forests. The surrounding landscape features miles of winding trails and seasonal cranberry bogs that define the region's heritage. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by pitch pines and cedar swamps, providing a beautiful contrast to the nearby coastal and urban areas of New Jersey. The flat coastal plain terrain makes it an accessible spot for walking and gentle exploration.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area provides a traditional outdoor experience with sites suitable for trailers and RVs. While the park does not offer electric or water hookups, it features a sanitary dump station and conveniently located water spigots for filling tanks. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, allowing for classic campfire evenings under the stars. Accessible restrooms and showers are maintained within the campground loops to ensure basic comforts are met during your rustic stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the famous Batona Trail, which winds through the forest and connects to other regional parks for long-distance hiking. History buffs should not miss a visit to Whitesbog Village, an early 20th-century company town located within the forest boundaries. The area is also a haven for birdwatching and photography, with diverse habitats supporting a wide range of local wildlife and rare plant species unique to the New Jersey interior.

Who This Park Is Best For

This state forest is ideal for RVers who prefer a rustic and self-contained travel style. It is a perfect match for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking solitude away from the crowded amenities of a modern resort. If you enjoy dry camping under a canopy of stars and waking up to the quiet atmosphere of the deep woods, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest will fit your travel style perfectly.

POOR MAINTENANCE! Showers filthy! Freezing cold outside and the doors broken and stays wide open. Another facility missing window from the door and it was 10 degrees outside. Looks like it has been that way for years! What happened to the maintenance staff? This place has gotten worse every year! Who oversees this area?? They should be ashamed and embarrassed!!

Overall, the campground was nice and clean. However, we ran into issues with the park ranger. We had rented two shelter sites, which were advertised as accommodating six people per shelter. In reality, each shelter only had four beds. To make up for the lack of beds, we pitched tents outside the shelters. The ranger stopped by and told us we were not allowed to set up tents outside. We explained the situation with the missing beds, and we also pointed out that there were no rules either in the printed copies we were given or online stating that tents were prohibited outside of shelters. The ranger could not find this rule either but insisted it existed. They did not offer any accommodation. Instead, they told us that if we wanted to use tents, we would have to pay for and reserve separate tent sites; otherwise, the tents would need to be removed. As a result, some of us had to sleep in hammocks or out in the open. We wish this rule had been clearly stated in advance so that we could have prepared better or chosen a different campground.

I visit here mainly for the walking trails which are well maintained and clearly marked. They’re mostly flat and not very challenging but if you’re just looking for a peaceful walk like me, they’re perfect. The campgrounds are among the best in the state. Cabins are also available. Each cabin comes with fire ring and inside, a toilet sink and bed. Prices are reasonable. It can be difficult to secure cabins and campsites. The whole park is clean and easy to navigate
