Brighton

Overview

Brighton State Park offers a serene escape in the remote Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Situated on the shores of Spectacle Pond, this park provides a classic camping experience where nature takes center stage. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life while enjoying the rugged beauty of the Green Mountain State. The park is well-regarded for its quiet atmosphere and well-maintained wooded sites that blend into the forest landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside the village of Island Pond, the park is tucked away in a densely forested region known for its pristine lakes and diverse wildlife. The landscape is dominated by mature hardwoods and evergreens, providing ample privacy between campsites. Its proximity to the Canadian border and the vast Wenlock Wildlife Management Area means visitors often feel like they have entered a true wilderness, characterized by cool mountain air and incredibly clear night skies.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional state park, the facilities here favor a rustic aesthetic. There are no hookups available, but the park provides a convenient sanitary dump station and potable water for RVers. Each site features a fire ring and picnic table. Visitors have access to clean restrooms and coin-operated hot showers. A highlight of the park is the sandy beach on Spectacle Pond, which includes a bathhouse, boat rentals, and a nature museum located in a historic log building.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation within and around the park. The shoreline hiking trails offer gentle walks with beautiful views of the water, while the nearby town of Island Pond provides local dining and supplies. Fishing is a popular pastime, with the pond being home to trout and perch. For a change of scenery, a short drive leads to Clyde River, a favorite spot for kayaking through scenic marshlands where moose are frequently spotted by quiet paddlers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers and campers who prioritize a scenic, rustic environment over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce children to the outdoors through swimming and nature programs. If you enjoy birdwatching and paddling, the tranquil waters of Spectacle Pond offer the perfect backdrop. It remains a top pick for travelers seeking the authentic, quiet charm of Vermont northern wilderness.

The main gates were closed and we were visiting so I found a little side road and parked near the train tracks, then followed a path over to the park where we could watch the beautiful sunset!! Highly recommend that!!!

One of the best state parks that we have here in Vermont. The Cabins are very fun, and great for a family or couples getaway. I enjoyed my stay, and look forward to staying at one of their cottage locations. Listening to fire crackle and pop at night with the loons echoing in the distance is a great experience, I highly recommend it.

Such a beautiful park!! Everything is well maintained. Peaceful setting. The staff are top notch! Very friendly! I hesitated to leave a review because this is a hidden gem that I would love to stay hidden. 10/10 would recommend!

Beautiful Vermont state park. Clean fire ring and raked site when we arrived. Immaculate bathrooms and showers. Generators only allowed 2 hours in morning and evening. Awesome! Quiet. Friendly staff. Community feel. Other campers courteous. Nature center with crafts and friendly knowledgeable staff.

Bothered by the sound of big trucks in the distance. Ruined the quiet, getting away from it all vibe. Pros: Loons, clean bathrooms, nice swim beach and view from the beach, beautiful country. Cons: Road noise, $10 camp wood, generator noise(not really the campgrounds fault). Basically, if you like it quieter and want a remote feel, this isn’t it.
