Buckhorn

Overview

Buckhorn State Park offers a unique outdoor experience situated on a scenic peninsula of the Castle Rock Flowage. This sprawling nature preserve in Necedah provides a perfect blend of wilderness and recreational comfort, making it a staple for Wisconsin travelers. Unlike typical commercial resorts, this park emphasizes the natural landscape, featuring diverse ecosystems including rare sand barrens and lush prairies. It serves as a peaceful retreat where the focus remains on the harmony between the water and the woods.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located just south of Necedah, Wisconsin, nestled along the shores of Castle Rock Lake, the state's fourth-largest inland water body. Its unique position on a peninsula provides miles of shoreline access and picturesque views of the Wisconsin River valley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by its transition from dense forest to open wetlands, creating a quiet environment far from the noise of major highways while remaining easily accessible for most RV rigs.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers will find well-maintained loops offering electric hookups and spacious sites that accommodate various equipment sizes. The park provides essential facilities including modern shower buildings, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station for self-contained units. Water enthusiasts can utilize the multiple boat launches and an accessible fishing pier. The park also features a designated swimming beach and several picnic areas equipped with grills, ensuring a comfortable stay for those planning multi-day visits.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, with endless opportunities for boating, kayaking, and fishing for walleye. On land, visitors can explore the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, which is just a short drive away and perfect for spotting migratory birds. Within the park boundaries, there are miles of hiking and interpretive trails that showcase local wildlife. During the winter months, the area transforms into a premier destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through the woods.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over high-traffic resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a classic lakeside camping experience where kids can enjoy the beach and bike trails safely. Very affordable and must try! We got the two meats and two sides, we love our leftovers. Just finished up our leftovers and have to say that’s always the quality test. Just as good as first day! The ribs fell off the bones and were juicy too! Stop in and give them a try, won’t be disappointed!

The food was amazing! Come before 5 on Thursdays to get free bingo cards, if you are not heat tolerant don't order the spicy stuff because it is really hot. Freshy hot which was great for me because I love spice. Have the spicy corn and loaded potatoes very good! 9/10 food wise. Highly recommend

They claim to have all day breakfast; they don’t. We walked in at 11am and were told breakfast was long over. Service was poor in general, the indoor seating areas were dark/sticky. Outdoor seating was good, smokers look great. We had a few drinks, coffee, wings and then went to find actual breakfast. Wings were good, coffee was undrinkable.

Stopped in here now 2 times. The food is delicious. Great BBQ food. The portions are huge. I loved the chicken tenders. The multiple sauce options were great.

I gave it 5 Stars, but my wife would have given in 1 Star. My order was excellent! I order the two meat plate. Extra fatty cut Brisket and Ribs. Just awesome! The bark was perfect, the meat to fat ratio creates a super tender juicy feast. I was excellent. The side of Creamy Corn was delish with a nice spicy flavor. The baked potato was cold and, well - awful. My wife ordered the Pulled Pork with fries and Potato Salad. The Pulled Pork was dry, no flavor - kind of like either sat all day and then was warmed up. The fries - cold. The Potato Salad was average, but nothing special. Bummer for my wife……. Service was average, I think we had a new server, she had no answers to our questions. The venue is great with lots of locals.
