Buckinghorse River Wayside
Overview
Buckinghorse River Wayside Provincial Park serves as a quintessential wilderness retreat along the historic Alaska Highway. Located near Pink Mountain, this park offers travelers a chance to reconnect with nature in a rugged, northern landscape. It is widely recognized as a peaceful sanctuary where the sounds of the rushing Buckinghorse River replace the noise of the road, providing a scenic backdrop for overnight stays during a long northern journey.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at Mile 175 of the Alaska Highway, the park is nestled within the expansive boreal forest of northeastern British Columbia. The geography is defined by rolling hills and the winding river, which is a major tributary in the region. Its remote position north of Fort St. John ensures dark skies and a true wilderness atmosphere, making it a favorite for those seeking solitude away from major urban centers.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic provincial site designed for dry camping, featuring gravel pads and basic facilities. Visitors will find pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at most sites. While there are no hookups available, the park provides a hand pump for water and easy river access. The sites are generally spacious enough for various rig sizes, though the primary draw remains the riverside views and natural privacy provided by the surrounding trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The river is a primary attraction, famously known for Arctic grayling fishing and scenic photography. Nature enthusiasts often spot local wildlife, including moose or bears, near the water’s edge. For those continuing their journey, the park is a perfect staging point for exploring the Pink Mountain area or heading further north toward the more rugged stretches of the highway leading toward the Yukon border.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a back-to-basics experience over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for travelers seeking a quiet stopover during a long haul up the Alaska Highway. If you value fishing, stargazing, and the sound of moving water over high-speed internet and cable TV, this riverside destination will be a highlight of your northern road trip.

Connor was absolutely amazing! He provided my charity cycling team with dinner when we were in the area and was so kind and supportive. The park was also beautiful. Definitely created some lasting memories!

Stayed here with a group of 23 and the staff were amazing! Connor stayed late to help us settle in and cooked us an amazing dinner. Would highly recommend staying here at this beautiful campsite!

Couldn’t recommend more! I’m part of a cycling nonprofit called Texas 4000 for Cancer and stayed at the campgrounds with a group of 23. When I called ahead, Connor and the rest of the staff were so friendly and welcoming when we arrived. They were generous and supportive of our cause, staying later than expected and offering to cook us food after the long ride. The amenities - wifi, showers, etc - were all very nice, the campground was clean, and the food served at the restaurant was delicious!

This is about a 20 site off grid campground next to a river. Pit toilets are available. Great place for an overnight stay.

Great access, quick jaunt off the highway. Road is kept in excellent condition. Bigger trailers and RESCUE will have no problem getting in and out. It's self registration, they have a deposit box on site, but you'll need cash/cheque to pay. Cost: $20.00 per night. Clean and quiet, river side sites.
