Buescher
Overview
Buescher State Park offers a serene escape into the famous Lost Pines region of Central Texas. While its neighbor, Bastrop State Park, often draws larger crowds, Buescher provides a quieter and more intimate experience for RV travelers. The park is defined by a lush canopy of loblolly pines and majestic oaks, creating a cool, shaded environment that feels worlds away from the nearby prairies. It is a place where the sound of the wind through the needles and the calls of local songbirds set the tone for a relaxing stay.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of the historic town of Smithville, TX, the park sits in a unique ecological pocket. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and sandy soils that support the westernmost stand of loblolly pines in the United States. One of the park's most famous features is Park Road 1C, a scenic twelve-mile winding road that connects Buescher to Bastrop State Park. This stretch of pavement is highly regarded by cyclists and photographers for its gentle curves and beautiful forest views.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates RVers with several campsites equipped with water and electric hookups. Most sites offer 30-amp service, though some can accommodate larger setups. While the park maintains a rustic atmosphere, guests have access to essential facilities including restrooms with showers and a convenient dump station. The centerpiece of the park is a 30-acre lake, which is stocked with rainbow trout in the winter and provides a peaceful spot for non-motorized boating and shoreline fishing throughout the year.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy over six miles of hiking and biking trails that weave through the forest. For a change of pace, the town of Smithville is just minutes away, offering a charming historic district famous for being the filming location of several major movies. Visitors can also explore the Colorado River for kayaking opportunities or visit the nearby Bastrop State Park to see the ongoing forest recovery and historic Civilian Conservation Corps architecture that defines the region.
Who This Park Is Best For
Buescher State Park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and those who prefer a tranquil, woodsy environment over a high-activity resort. It is a fantastic choice for birdwatchers and hikers who want to explore unique ecosystems at a slower pace. Because of its shaded sites and calm lake, it is also perfect for families and solo travelers looking for a quiet retreat where they can disconnect and enjoy the simple pleasures of a traditional Texas state park experience.

With this unique Lost Pines area in Texas, this state park offers some interesting hiking with the ability to tie trails together for some longer hikes. It's not a very popular Texas State park, which I appreciated. I saw a few people on the trails but over got some good solitude.

This park was absolutely breathtaking! It is connected to Bastrop State Park by a magical winding road, strewn with wildflowers, prairies and pines that my son got to skateboard on as it wasn’t too busy. There are so many trails and things to see and explore. The camping is great, the bathrooms are clean, and the park itself is well maintained.

Lots of great hiking trails and different elevations. Also nice to drive around on motorcycles or bike.

Excellent ride along from Buescher to bastrop national park. 11 mile one way about 750 ft elevation. Very light car traffic. Some of the hills are steep. Make sure your gears are in good working order.
