Burke Lake Park (Fairfax County Park)
Overview
Burke Lake Park offers a refreshing escape into nature within the heart of Northern Virginia. Spanning 888 acres, this Fairfax County Park is centered around a picturesque 218-acre lake. While the camping experience leans toward a more rustic, wooded atmosphere, the park provides a wealth of recreational activities that make it a favorite for local families and visiting RVers looking to disconnect without driving deep into the wilderness. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate scenic lakefront views and a dense forest canopy.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Fairfax Station, VA, the park feels worlds away from the nearby urban sprawl of Washington, D.C. The campground is nestled under a canopy of mature trees, providing excellent shade and privacy for campers. Its proximity to major transit routes makes it an accessible stopover for those traveling through the Mid-Atlantic region. The surrounding area transitions from quiet residential neighborhoods to lush woodlands, offering a tranquil buffer from the pace of northern Virginia life.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-known for its extensive recreational facilities that cater to all ages. Visitors can enjoy a 4.7-mile loop trail that encircles the lake, which is perfect for morning jogs or afternoon bike rides. On-site features include a miniature train, a carousel, and an ice cream parlor, which add a nostalgic charm to any stay. For sports enthusiasts, there is an 18-hole par 3 golf course and a popular disc golf course. It is important to note that campsites are primitive and do not offer individual hookups, though a dump station is available.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, guests are ideally positioned to explore the region’s rich history. The National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center is a short drive away, housing the Space Shuttle Discovery. For history buffs, George Washington’s Mount Vernon is easily reachable for a day trip. Additionally, the park’s lake is a premier destination for freshwater fishing and non-motorized boating, with rowboat and electric motorboat rentals available during the warmer seasons.
Who This Park Is Best For

It us a very nice park. I live in MD, so I found a local treasure. Apparently this is where the locals go to get away from crazy busy roads. The lake is so pretty. The leaves changing added an extra nice touch. The hike was clear of debris. It is very clean and very family friendly. The only reason its not a 5 was parking was tricky and there wasn't alot of spaces.

This is one of our favorite spots. The trail around the lake lets you get some exercise and see lots of birds and wildlife. If you want to fish or get out on the lake, you can bring your boat or rent one there. There’s several picnic areas, a narrow gauge train, disc golf, and a variety of programs throughout the year. Parking can be a challenge but there’s plenty of it. Bring a lunch and spend the day!

The trail around this lake is perfect for walking. Most of it is well shaded, so you can even get your steps in on a 90+ degree day! You can take several paths around the lake, and there are multiple entry points, it's roughly 5 miles around if you don't deviate too much from the circular path. There are activities that you can engage in along the trail as well and foot traffic isn't too bad However, if you are looking for a biking experience, this trail is not among the better options as it's quite narrow and many folks who are walking are not really used to sharing the trail with cyclists (in my experience). Oh, and there's lots of birds in the water and you will see several benches where folks are fishing. It's now my go-to trail when I want to get my 5 mile walk in and it's super hot outside.

Burke Lake Park in Fairfax is a beautifully maintained park built around a scenic reservoir. It offers a diverse range of outdoor activities—from a peaceful c115 ft elevated 4.7‑mile shaded trail ideal for walking, biking, and wildlife spotting to well-loved kid-friendly attractions like a miniature train, carousel, and mini-golf. The lake is a popular fishing spot accessible piers, boat rentals, and a marina that enhances the experience for anglers and paddlers. Parking fee is applicable for non residents and multiple lots are available. The park also offers multiple picnic tables corners, sand volleyball zones and a few free hand exercise spots.

It was very easy to get tickets in advance online but they can also be purchased at the window. They accept contactless payment (Apple pay, tap to pay etc) which is convenient. The miniature train travels for about a total of 10min through the park's picturesque views of the surrounding woodlands and lake. They have the classic carousel 🎠 ride, multiple picnic areas, lots of people walking on the trails that loop around the lake, a mini golf section, and a playground! We ended our visit by enjoying some ice cream at their ice cream shop. They also served pretzels, hot dogs, and a variety of refreshments. Bathrooms are clean and well kept. FYI Non-Fairfax residents pay a parking fee of $12 at the entrance. Lots of parking spaces. Overall, my toddler had a great time and we will be coming back.
