Burnidge Forest Preserve/Paul Wolff

Overview

Paul Wolff Campground is nestled within the sprawling 600-acre Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin, Illinois. This destination offers a tranquil retreat for RVers who prioritize natural beauty and spacious environments over typical resort settings. Operated by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the park serves as a vital green space where visitors can experience the diverse landscapes of Northern Illinois. It is a well-regarded spot for those seeking a quiet, scenic escape while remaining within reach of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive from the city center, the preserve feels worlds away due to its glacial topography and diverse ecosystems. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, restored tallgrass prairies, and dense oak woodlands. Travelers will appreciate the balance of easy accessibility to suburban conveniences while staying in a protected nature sanctuary that emphasizes environmental preservation and the restoration of native Illinois flora. The landscape provides a peaceful buffer from the nearby urban sprawl.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 89 improved sites equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups, though it is important to note that individual water and sewer connections are not available at each pad. A central dump station and fresh water fill-up are provided for guest convenience near the entrance. Visitors have access to over nine miles of multi-purpose trails, which are perfect for hiking or horseback riding. The sites are generally gravel-based and include essentials like picnic tables and fire rings for a traditional camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days fishing at Big Timber Lake or exploring the extensive trail system that winds through the preserve's interior. For those looking to venture further, the nearby Fox River offers additional water-based recreation and cycling paths, while downtown Elgin provides cultural dining and entertainment options. The preserve is also a premier spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography, particularly during migration seasons when the wetlands attract various rare species to the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who enjoy a more rustic, forest-based camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for those traveling with horses, thanks to the dedicated equestrian camping area and specialized trails. If you prefer quiet nights under the stars and want to wake up to the sounds of local wildlife rather than the hum of a city, this preserve is an excellent selection for a weekend getaway or a peaceful stopover.

Expansive Forest Preserve with miles of diverse trails that made for an outstanding hike. The trails range from wide paved, to gravel, to narrow natural trails. The trails were well-maintained and in great shape, but there wasn't a lot of signage. The AllTrails app was also incorrect on trail locations, however, the trails were still relatively easy to navigate.

its quiet here and there are nice clean grassy sites, many with shade- elec. & water- 2 dump stations. While here we visited the towns of Elgin, Geneva, St. Charles, and West Chicago (mom lives there!). Weather was pretty good while here in late June. We will be back!

All the sites are in sun. Some close to each other. Not much privacy.

So we love this place as it offers many different options as far as where you like to hike. If you prefer prairie, then you can hike prairie. If you want wooded, then yep, got that too. We have camped at the adjoining Paul Wolff campground. I love the variety when it comes to hiking. Last time we came across chicken of the woods fungus. Completely edible and great to work with but alas, no one can forage in Illinois forest preserves (btw Wisconsin rules for foraging are complete opposite 😉). Anyway, great place to walk, hike and even bike.
