Burro Mountain Homestead RV Park
Overview
Burro Mountain Homestead RV Park is a unique destination tucked into the high-altitude forests of southwestern New Mexico. Unlike standard roadside stops, this park offers a rustic retreat centered around community and the natural beauty of the high desert. Located within the Burro Mountain range, it serves as a peaceful basecamp for travelers looking to escape the heat and noise of urban life. The park is well-known for its welcoming atmosphere, where neighbors often gather for social events at the historic homestead building, creating a sense of belonging for short-term and seasonal visitors alike.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,600 feet, the park is surrounded by the vast Gila National Forest. This high-mountain setting provides significantly cooler temperatures than the nearby lowlands, making it a seasonal favorite for those exploring the Southwest. The landscape is characterized by ponderosa pines and rugged rocky outcrops, offering a true backcountry feel while remaining within a reasonable driving distance from the town of Silver City. It is a prime spot for those who enjoy being immersed in a dense, quiet forest environment far from the highway.
Amenities & Park Features
The heart of the park is the Homestead building, which houses a library, kitchen, and gathering space for community potlucks and activities. Guests have access to full hookup sites that accommodate various rig sizes, though the terrain is naturally uneven and integrated into the forest landscape. Practical facilities include laundry rooms, clean restrooms, and showers. For those who enjoy active recreation, the park features a dedicated network of hiking trails and is highly regarded as a premier destination for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, offering direct access to miles of forest service roads.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Exploration is easy with Silver City located just a short drive away, offering a vibrant arts scene and historic architecture. Adventurous travelers can visit the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument to explore ancient Mogollon culture and see incredible prehistoric cliff dwellings. Nearby, the City of Rocks State Park provides surreal geological formations perfect for photography and sightseeing. The area is also a major gateway to the Continental Divide Trail, providing world-class hiking and birdwatching opportunities in a diverse and rugged ecosystem.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and ATV riders who value direct access to miles of rugged mountain trails. It appeals strongly to RVers seeking a sense of community and a slower pace of life rather than a high-speed luxury resort experience. If you are a traveler looking for scenic mountain solitude and a friendly, social environment in a remote forest setting, Burro Mountain Homestead is an excellent fit for your New Mexico travel itinerary.

Very nice campground tucked away in the forest far from "civilisation". Friendly staff, friendly people. Full hook-ups. One drawback a 7½ mile terrible washboard road from the Hwy-90.

Beautiful place! We originally booked for one month but enjoyed it so much we extended our stay. The employees are fantastic and common areas are very clean. We will be back!!

My in-laws love it here, they live here and we came to stay. We stayed in the Woodland room, it was perfect. The room was cleaner than any hotel I have ever stayed in and I am from the East Coast. It was cleaner then Disney hotel rooms. The room had a wonderful air conditioner that kept us cool during the day when it did get hot. The room was fully stocked with anything we would need for a week (never even needed to ask staff for anything). We had a full kitchen with pots and pans and all the cooking equipment you would need to cook for the week and the bathroom was stocked with more than enough towels for four people and halfway through. They even asked us if we needed more. The area is breathtaking! The trails are amazing. The staff, all polite and friendly and willing to help. I love that the staff even wanted to get to know you and know where you’re from and just know about you because it made me feel so comfortable and like I was at home. Everyone waved when you went by, and always had a smile. I have no complaints and while there’s not a ton for young kids to do (we have an 11 month old and a 9 year old), we were also visiting grandparents so we found things to do. The deer come right to you and the museum was so neat to walk through and read the history of the place. We will definitely come back, my husband more often just because he is seeing his parents but we can’t wait to visit next year as a family. Anyone looking for a gorgeous, rustic getaway to reset and enjoy nature this is the place to go. If I could give them 10 stars I would.

Tremendous place with really interesting history. Their museum in the lodge is great and their library really extensive. Only downside is the road in, the washboard is really rough on an RV and it really shakes things up. The ATV trails from the location are really good and interesting with lots of wildlife

We are just wrapping up a week at Burro Mountain Homestead and I can't say enough positive things about it! The facilities are all spotless, the people are extremely friendly and access to miles and miles of trails is right at your doorstep. Take your time on the road in and you'll be fine. One important piece of info. . .it's 16 miles to the closest gas station, so if you plan on off-roading, bring fuel. We'll be back!
