Button Bay

Overview

Button Bay State Park sits on a 253-acre peninsula in Vergennes, offering a quiet escape on the shores of Lake Champlain. Named for the unique button-like concretions found along the shore, this park is known for its panoramic lake views and classic Vermont landscape. It provides a peaceful setting where the mountains meet the water, making it a staple for campers seeking natural beauty without the flash of a crowded commercial resort.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perched on a bluff in the heart of the Champlain Valley, providing some of the most stunning sunset views over the Adirondack Mountains. Its position on the western edge of Vermont makes it a prime spot for exploring the state oldest city, Vergennes. Visitors are surrounded by mature forests and rocky shorelines, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from the hustle of modern life while remaining accessible to local conveniences.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park maintains a rustic feel, it includes a rare state park swimming pool with a lifeguard, which is a major draw for families during the summer months. For RVers, there are dozens of sites suitable for trailers and motorhomes, though visitors should note there are no utility hookups at the sites. The park features a modern nature center and a scenic nature trail leading to Button Point. Practical needs are met with a central dump station and clean hot showers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short walk from the campground, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum offers a deep dive into the region nautical history and local shipwreck stories. Boating is a primary activity here, with easy access to the water for kayaking or fishing for bass and northern pike. For a change of pace, the historic downtown Vergennes area provides charming boutique shops and local dining options, while the nearby Shelburne Museum offers world-class art and Americana.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and families who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury amenities. Because there are no utility hookups, it is best suited for RVers who are comfortable with dry camping in a tranquil environment. It is the perfect choice for travelers looking to disconnect, enjoy the water, and experience the quiet, authentic charm of the Vermont lakeside at their own pace.

Beautiful campground, right on the lake. A bit of a drive for kayak access but there is a path to the beach. There is a pool but that's only open in the summer. Large campsites, quite level. Like all VT state parks, no hookups.

A wonderful campground for first-time campers and seasoned tent comfort-campers alike. It’s better to camp in the lean-to loop, as the RV crew mostly camp in the far loop. The cabins are so sweet there, we’ve been lucky enough to get a few nights, but had to switch as there are usually just single nights available for each cabin (if any are) right after reservations open for the following year. Button Bay has beautiful natural features including the nature center and the natural rock jetty out into the lake. Bring your bikes to make the ride out to the point quick and easy, as cars are not allowed. It’s also a lovely walk to get out there, though. Unbelievable sunsets over Champlain almost every night.

We love camping at button bay but when not camping we hit up the pool with a day pass! Great pool for littles.

Button Bay is a lovely park. For my not my first choice to camp at the sites are quite open in the one loop but flat so probably better for small rv's. Though I don't prefer the layout myself the sites were very clean and well maintained park. This is a great family park as it has a very cool nature center, playground AND the only VT state park with a pool. Easy to walk throughout the park as well with a walking trail between camping loops and day use area. Really lovely walk out to the point and easily accessible.

I adore this place for the trails and Button Bay Point. It's a magical place for walking, picnics, swimming or just hanging out with a book or your thoughts. The campground is amazingly well kept too.
