Cachuma Lake Recreation Area

Overview

Cachuma Lake Recreation Area offers a peaceful, nature-focused retreat nestled in the scenic Santa Ynez Valley. Managed by Santa Barbara County, this park provides a serene escape from the coast, serving as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate wide-open spaces. With its stunning lake views and rolling oak-covered hills, the park emphasizes a rustic, tranquil experience where the primary focus is connecting with the natural landscape of Southern California.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Santa Barbara, CA, the park sits along Highway 154, providing a dramatic drive through the Santa Ynez Mountains. The surrounding area is characterized by rugged wilderness and oak woodlands, offering a distinct contrast to the busy coastline just over the mountain pass. Amenities & Park Features

The recreation area is well-equipped for varied camping styles, offering numerous campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs. While it is not a full-hookup luxury resort, the park features essential campground amenities including dump stations, restrooms, and hot showers. Visitors can also take advantage of the on-site general store for supplies, and launch their own watercraft or rent boats from the marina to fully enjoy the expansive waters of the lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campground, visitors can explore the vibrant wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley or take a short trip to the historic charm of Santa Barbara. Within the park, bird watching and nature hiking are popular activities, as the lake attracts a diverse array of wildlife, including bald eagles. Fishing enthusiasts also frequently visit to cast lines for bass and trout, making the recreation area a versatile destination for active outdoor adventurers.

Who This Park Is Best For

Cachuma Lake Recreation Area is ideal for travelers seeking a nature-centric RV experience rather than a polished, amenity-heavy resort. It is a fantastic choice for families, bird watchers, and those who enjoy boating or fishing. If you prefer quiet mornings by the water and proximity to mountain trails over resort-style pools, this location provides the perfect balance of comfort and natural wonder for your next trip.

Beautiful and peaceful spot! I had an amazing time here — the lake views are incredible, and the sunset was absolutely stunning. The weather was perfect, and it’s a great place for a relaxing BBQ with friends. Everything felt calm and refreshing, away from the city noise. Definitely one of my favorite places around Goleta! 🌅🔥💧

I am a local from Santa Ynez and I spend most of my free time down at the lake fishing along the shore or out in our boat. The fishing here is terrific. I do very well off of the shore and even better on a boat. They have several boats for rent. I believe they offer 2 hour, half day and full day rentals. Really nice Easy start aluminum and/or pontoon boats. They also have kayak rentals. The boys at the tackle shop are great. We hit it off right away. Great bunch of guys and gal🙂 I frequent the restaurant and bar often while im there. Sometimes ill just go there to hang out at the restaurant. It has a terrific vibe. Brad and Natalie are amongst the very best leaders in service. They always greet me with a smile. The food is excellent. I recommend the BLT. I get it every single time😄 The restaurant and bar area are pristine. The Bar has 3 big screen tv's, multiple beers on tap and every mixed drink you could possibly think of. Everybody there is just outstanding so I apologize for the names I did not mention. Im just drawing a blank right now. Its been a great day of fishing 🎣 and im burnt😄 I have never camped here however i have camped at several other locations. They have many spaces for RV's, 5th wheels, tents, chairs, benches etc....clean and flat grounds....it's all in very good condition. They offer camping, hiking, disc golf, kayaking, boating and fishing. They also have waterfront bungalows for rent.

Cachuma Lake is a great spot for camping – peaceful, with clean restrooms and showers. There are plenty of tent sites and nice trails to explore. Just keep in mind that little animals, like raccoons, might come by. Don’t leave food out on the tables!

got there last Thursday for a week of camping with family. Coming from Bakersfield I’d hoped for greener pastures, apparently no irrigation and dead grass.Come Monday we had heavy equipment and jack hammers digging up the lot next to me, had to move my truck so they could dig a hole in my driveway. This continued til the next Friday morning. Why can’t this be done in off months? We made reservations back in January. The dust and noise were overwhelming and not exactly a camping experience. Unaware of the fact that Monday and Tuesday water shut off 6hrs each day, caught us completely by surprise. I only give one star because fishing was good. I know no one will contact me and offer some sort of reimbursement and I also know this park is off our list for future trips.

Great lake for boating, fishing or just kicking back and watching the water.Good campgrounds, lots of ground squirrels. So watch out for the whole stone twister ankle! You can have campfires all year round anybody. That's a camper knows you've got to have a campfire to make your camping experience complete. There's a store just a few 100 yd from the camp. Sites will supply and there's a restaurant in bar sitting on the have fand the people that work the park are great.
