Caledonia
Overview
Caledonia State Park offers a peaceful retreat nestled within the scenic South Mountain region of Pennsylvania. Spanning over 1,100 acres, this historic park is named after the iron furnace established here by Thaddeus Stevens in the mid-19th century. Today, it serves as a lush sanctuary where history meets outdoor recreation. Visitors are greeted by a landscape of rolling hills, dense forests, and the gentle flow of Conococheague Creek, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet escape into nature without sacrificing accessibility.
Location & Surroundings
Conveniently located along the Lincoln Highway in Fayetteville, PA, the park sits roughly midway between the historic towns of Chambersburg and Gettysburg. The surrounding Michaux State Forest provides a vast backdrop for exploration, while the terrain itself is characterized by its mountainous beauty. One of the park's most famous geographical features is the Appalachian Trail, which winds directly through the grounds, inviting hikers to step onto one of the world’s most iconic long-distance footpaths just steps from their campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
For RVers, the park features two primary camping areas, with the Hosack Run Campground being particularly popular due to its modern sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electric hookups. While individual sewer connections are not available, a convenient dump station and fresh water fill points are provided. On-site recreation is abundant, featuring an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a snack bar, several miles of well-maintained hiking trails, and picturesque picnic pavilions that cater to families and groups looking to enjoy the fresh mountain air.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The park's location makes it a perfect base camp for exploring regional history, specifically the Gettysburg National Military Park, which is only a short fifteen-minute drive away. History enthusiasts can spend days touring the battlefields and museums before returning to the quiet of the woods. For those who enjoy sports, the Caledonia Golf Club is situated adjacent to the park, offering a challenging 18-hole course. Additionally, the nearby Totem Pole Playhouse provides high-quality summer stock theater performances within the park boundaries.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for nature-oriented families and history buffs who appreciate a rustic but well-maintained environment. It is an excellent choice for RVers who enjoy traditional state park camping where the focus is on hiking, stream fishing, and quiet evenings by the fire. Because of its proximity to major historical sites, it also serves as a strategic stopover for travelers on a colonial heritage tour of the Northeast who prefer a forested setting over a commercial parking lot.

15 miles in a circle, if you get the app Strava it shows you the path your walking on. it’s a cool detailed map of the trails all around you and you can time your pace there too! it’s pretty awesome. but the park had lots to hike. we just did 15 miles but you could surely get it even more.

Very well maintained campground. Great roads. Lots of space/privacy between most sites. Clean bathrooms with good, hot showers. Started fall color change while we were there (first week of October). We would camp here again.

Caledonia State Park is a true gem in Pennsylvania! This beautiful park offers something for everyone including stunning trails like the Appalachian Trail and Ramble Trail, perfect for hiking or a leisurely stroll through lush forests and alongside clear streams. The historic iron furnace adds a unique touch of history, and the picnic areas and playgrounds make it ideal for families. The well-maintained facilities and friendly staff elevate the experience. Whether you're camping, fishing, or just soaking in the natural beauty, Caledonia is a must-visit. Highly recommend for a peaceful outdoor getaway!

It’s a really great campground. Sites are just far enough apart. Couple issues I had were the tent site being so much higher than the parking area. Had to climb up and down. Site was recommended to me by a park employee because I was trailering a motorcycle. Parking spot was longer to accommodate the vehicle. Still though I’d probably use the site again if I had to. The only other issue was the road noise. It’s just off RT30 and it’s a busy road. All night it seemed. Very loud. But what an absolutely beautiful area. Has a beautiful pool. The streams that flow through it are amazing. Well kept. Bath house was very nice. Very clean. Park employees were just great. Just wish it was a little quieter at night.
