Known for its quiet atmosphere and scenic vistas, this park serves as a serene getaway for those looking to escape the bustle of city life. The park covers over 1,000 acres, offering a mix of pine and hardwood forests that provide a lush backdrop for a tranquil camping experience. It is a premier destination for water enthusiasts and nature lovers who appreciate well-maintained facilities in a rustic, natural setting.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated in the town of Calhoun Falls, SC, positioned near the Georgia border. The primary draw is Lake Richard B. Russell, a sprawling body of water known for its undeveloped shoreline and clear water. Unlike many other southern lakes, this area remains remarkably peaceful, surrounded by rolling hills and dense woodlands. The location provides easy access to the Savannah River Valley, making it a central point for exploring the natural beauty of the western corner of the state while staying tucked away in a quiet, rural environment.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground offers spacious sites that accommodate a variety of RV sizes, with many featuring full hookups including water, electricity, and sewer connections. For those who enjoy life on the water, the park provides multiple boat ramps and a seasonal swimming beach. Visitors can take advantage of clean bathhouses, a fishing pier, and several picnic shelters perfect for family gatherings. The park also features a well-stocked tackle shop and a playground, ensuring that both long-term travelers and weekend visitors have everything they need for a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the historic town of Abbeville, which offers a glimpse into South Carolina’s past with its charming square and local theater. Outdoor recreation is the main attraction, with miles of hiking and biking trails winding through the forest. Fishing is a major draw here, as the lake is famous for its trophy bass and crappie. For a change of pace, the nearby Diamond Hill Mine offers a unique opportunity for rockhounds to dig for quartz crystals and amethyst in a rugged setting.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for active retirees and families who prioritize water-based recreation and quiet evenings. If you prefer a park where the focus is on the environment rather than high-energy resort amenities, you will feel right at home here. It is particularly well-suited for boaters and anglers looking for easy lake access. The spacious sites and natural buffers between campers make it a top choice for RVers seeking privacy and a genuine connection with the outdoors during their South Carolina travels.

I stayed at site T7 this weekend. Great site, close to the Lake. Bathroom a few minutes walk from the site. Both campgrounds 1 and 2 looked great. Bathhouse clean. Really nice campsite, will be back and book T6. Short haul from the parking lot. Totally doable. My dog had ample room to run around.

Calhoun Falls State Park is a wonderful place to bring the family for a day of fun. The park offers many amenities, including a pavilion and numerous spots perfect for picnics. Visitors will appreciate the clean restrooms and the designated beach with a nice, marked-off swimming area. There's also a playground sure to delight the kids. The only drawback is that the picnic tables are quite worn and rough, and could stand to be replaced. Otherwise, this is a truly lovely park!

We stayed after labor day. There were lots of empty sites right on the water. Showers were hot. Bathrooms were clean. Camp area was flat and plenty. We were on site 73

Great place to get away for a few days. Everything is conveniently located within the park, including access to Comfort Stations and fishing spots. Hiking trails are available, and there is a store by the boat launch that has fishing poles you can use with a valid Sc fishing license. Get a Huckleberry icee while you are there! Swimming and tennis courts provided an extra common area to hang out and enjoy the park. Campsite 19 and 20 provide the best views of the lake and sunrise/sunset.

I went to Calhoun Falls State Park with my two dogs for a day trip. Entry fee is $3.00. They have a nice sandy beach, play areas for children, picnic tables, basketball court, tennis courts, a marina, convenience store, boat ramp and fishing pier that I saw. We took the 2 mile trail that loops through the woods, it’s located on the other side of the road near the tennis courts. In addition to the day area, there were camp/RV sites located near the lake. I’ll definitely be back to go camping when it cools down a bit.
