Overview
Camp Creek State Park and Forest offers a genuine Appalachian escape spread across nearly 6,000 acres of lush, rolling woodlands in southern West Virginia. Known primarily for its scenic waterfalls and tranquil atmosphere, this destination provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature. It manages to feel deeply secluded while remaining a highly accessible stop for travelers navigating the mountain terrain of the Mountain State.
Location & Surroundings
Located just off Interstate 77 at Exit 20, the park is situated in the heart of Mercer County, making it an easy detour for north-south travelers. The surrounding landscape is defined by the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, featuring deep valleys and cold, clear streams. While the park feels like a remote wilderness, it is only a short drive from the towns of Princeton and Bluefield. This location offers the perfect balance between pristine forest surroundings and proximity to local services, ensuring travelers have everything they need within a twenty-minute drive.
Amenities & Park Features
The park offers two primary camping areas, with Mash Fork Campground catering specifically to RVers with 26 gravel sites featuring 30-amp and 50-amp electric hookups. Visitors have access to centrally located bathhouses with hot showers, as well as a convenient dump station for self-contained units. For those who prefer a more primitive experience, the Blue Jay Campground offers a more rustic setting. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, allowing for traditional campfire evenings under the stars in a well-maintained forest environment that emphasizes the natural landscape over commercial amenities.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with over 35 miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Guests should not miss Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls, two picturesque cascades that are easily accessible via short, well-marked paths. The namesake creek is frequently stocked with trout throughout the spring, making it a premier destination for anglers looking to test their skills in cold mountain waters. Additionally, the park features several playgrounds and volleyball courts, providing plenty of activity for active families.

Restrooms clean and well kept. The attendees were all very helpful and nice. Lots of trails, but the creek was dry during my stay.

Camp Creek State Park is a fantastic getaway with something for everyone. The easy, well-marked trails lead to not one, but two beautiful waterfalls—Mash Fork Falls and Campbell Falls—which are close enough for a relaxed stroll. I loved how you could walk right up to them—perfect for photos and nature lovers. The playground and open space make it great for kids (or adults who still enjoy a swing), and the forested picnic areas are ideal for relaxing after a hike. The park feels clean, quiet, and well-maintained. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the facilities—bathrooms, campsites, and shower houses—are all kept in great shape. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk, a fun family day, or just some time in nature, Camp Creek State Park is definitely worth the visit.
