Canyon Ferry/Chinamans Gulch

Overview

Chinaman's Gulch offers a serene and rustic getaway directly on the shores of the expansive Canyon Ferry Reservoir. As a key part of the Bureau of Reclamation recreation system near Helena, this campground provides a traditional Montana outdoor experience that is hard to replicate in more developed areas. It is characterized by its wide-open layout and stunning, panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges. For those seeking a quiet escape without the noise or crowds of a commercial resort, this location delivers a scenic lakeside retreat focused entirely on natural beauty and tranquility.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the northeastern shore of the reservoir, the park is approximately 20 miles east of the historic city of Helena, Montana. The landscape features rolling hills and high-desert sagebrush typical of the region, offering completely unobstructed views of the water and the majestic Big Belt Mountains. Because the area is relatively open and lacks heavy tree cover, it provides excellent opportunities for world-class stargazing on clear nights. The proximity to the water makes it a prime spot for those who enjoy the soothing sounds of the lake and the sight of local waterfowl.

Amenities & Park Features

As a more primitive camping destination, Chinaman's Gulch focuses on the essential needs of the outdoor enthusiast. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups available, the park provides several functional features for a comfortable stay:

  • Vault toilets that are centrally located for easy access
  • Hand pumps for potable drinking water
  • Individual sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings

Most sites are spacious and leveled enough to accommodate a variety of mid-sized RVs and trailers. Additionally, a convenient nearby boat ramp ensures easy water access for those bringing their own vessels.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is Canyon Ferry Lake, which is widely renowned for offering world-class walleye, perch, and trout fishing throughout the season. Boaters, paddleboarders, and kayakers will find plenty of space to explore the reservoir’s many hidden coves and inlets. For a change of scenery, a short drive into Helena allows travelers to explore the Montana State Capitol or hike the expansive trail systems at Mount Helena City Park. History buffs will also appreciate the proximity to local sapphire mines and the historic Missouri River corridor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for dry campers and boondockers who prioritize natural scenery and water access over luxury amenities. If you travel with a self-contained RV and enjoy waking up with the sunrise over the water, you will find this site fits your travel style perfectly. It is especially suited for anglers and boaters who want immediate access to one of Montana’s premier recreational fisheries. Families looking for a simple, quiet weekend surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Treasure State will feel right at home in this peaceful environment.

would be great if the center camp sites down towards the lake would be pull through sites and if they opened back up the area they now have blocked off for day use only. It was a great place for groups.
