Canyon Ferry/Court Sheriff

Overview

Court Sheriff is a premier recreation destination located on the picturesque eastern shore of Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, this campground offers a blend of accessibility and rugged Montana beauty. Visitors are drawn to the wide-open spaces and the impressive vistas of the Big Belt Mountains that frame the horizon. It serves as an essential hub for water enthusiasts looking to explore Montana’s third-largest body of water while enjoying a clean, well-maintained environment that feels deeply connected to the local landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 20 miles east of Helena, MT, the park provides a serene escape from the city while remaining within a short drive of urban conveniences. The landscape is characterized by rolling grasslands and the shimmering expanse of the reservoir. Because of its position on the eastern shore, campers often enjoy spectacular sunsets that reflect off the water. The surrounding Canyon Ferry Recreation Area offers a diverse ecosystem, making it a prime spot for observing local birds and wildlife in their natural habitat.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is specifically designed to cater to modern travelers, featuring paved camping pads that provide a level surface for various rig sizes. Many of the sites offer electrical hookups, which is a significant amenity for those seeking a balance between boondocking and full-service resorts. On-site facilities include vault toilets, potable water stations, and a dedicated boat launch for easy water access. Each individual site is furnished with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for traditional campfire cooking and evening relaxation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with exceptional opportunities for walleye and trout fishing. Boaters and kayakers can spend days exploring the various coves and hidden inlets of the lake. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Elkhorn Mountains offer rugged hiking trails and scenic overlooks. Additionally, history buffs can make the quick trip into Helena to visit the Montana State Capitol or explore the historic Last Chance Gulch area for shopping and local dining.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for active families and anglers who want immediate access to the water without sacrificing basic power needs. It appeals to travelers who appreciate a more natural, public-land environment rather than a commercial urban park. If you enjoy wide-open sky views and a community centered around outdoor recreation, Court Sheriff provides the perfect home base for your Montana adventures. It is especially suited for those who travel with their own boats or kayaks to fully experience the reservoir.

Spot 11 is by far the most quiet, lagoon access, lake access, vault toilets across the path if needed, even dog poo bags available and the camp host keeps it very tidy and clean. Definitely one of the best Helena area campgrounds I've enjoyed.

This is a pretty good place to camp, good spot for boaters. the camps were well maintained and the vualt toilet was pretty clean also. The lake was right next to the camp site. A downside was that most of the campsites were close to each other. We stayed in the walk to sites that weren't too far from the nearest parking spot. You might also be able to see deer here, I was walking to the bathroom at night, and there was some deer right next to the bathroom. Overall it's a nice place and I would probably come here again! 👍

As usual a great corp of engineers camp ground. Paved spots, nice picnic tables and grills, lots of doors on the water. Fresh water for your tanks available at a couple of places. 30 minutes to Helena. Several vault toilets.

Lakes a lot lower than I’ve ever seen, but! The campsite is still beautiful just a walk to the water, and the new camp host is exceptionally amazing! He keeps the site so clean, and is very kind and helpful. Would come back again (: $7 a night with a golden parks pass discount.
