Canyon Lake - COE/Cranes Mill

Overview

Located on a scenic peninsula on the southwestern shore of Canyon Lake, Cranes Mill Park offers a quintessential Texas Hill Country experience. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park is known for its rugged beauty and direct access to the water. It provides a peaceful atmosphere where the focus remains on the natural landscape. Visitors often appreciate the spacious site layouts and the opportunity to watch local wildlife like white-tailed deer and migratory birds right from their RV doorstep.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated on the edge of a long, limestone-rich peninsula, providing many sites with expansive views of Canyon Lake. The surrounding landscape features the rolling hills and scrub oaks typical of the region. Because it is positioned away from major highways, the environment is remarkably quiet, save for the sounds of the water. The proximity to the Cranes Mill Marina means boaters have easy access to fuel and supplies, while the elevation changes offer unique vantage points for sunset photography.

Amenities & Park Features

As a COE park, the amenities focus on utility and outdoor recreation. Most sites offer water and electric hookups, though travelers should be prepared to use the communal dump station upon departure. The park features a two-lane boat ramp and a dedicated fishing pier, making it a favorite for anglers targeting bass and catfish. Families and groups can enjoy the covered picnic shelters and fire rings. The restrooms and showers are centrally located, providing essential comforts while maintaining the rustic charm of a public campground.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the area is rich with Hill Country adventures. A short drive takes you to the Guadalupe River, famous for tubing and fly fishing. Exploring the nearby town of New Braunfels offers a chance to visit the historic Gruene Hall or enjoy local dining. Nature enthusiasts can hike the Canyon Lake Gorge to see fossilized tracks or explore the scenic overlooks at Overlook Park. For those seeking a day trip, the charming boutiques and galleries of Wimberley provide a perfect afternoon diversion.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for travelers who prioritize natural scenery and water access over high-end resort luxuries like pools or clubhouses. It is a fantastic fit for boaters, fishers, and birdwatchers looking for a tranquil base camp. Because of its quiet nature, it attracts retirees and families seeking a traditional camping experience. RVers who enjoy spacious sites and don't mind a short drive to reach local conveniences will find this to be one of the most relaxing spots in Central Texas.

Nice park and nice stay. Restrooms need a good cleaning. Campsite was large and nice with a cover over the picnic table. Burn ban is in effect but neighboring campsite had a large fire and I had to tell them about the burn ban which was clearly posted more than once at the entrance. No staff were available and not one employee was seen our entire stay. Check in just had our site tag on a bulletin board at the entrance. Park was nice and quiet and we enjoyed watching all of the deer in the campground.

It is very cool place. We spent this weekend there. Nice wheatear nice view. Very nice tables with really big roofs that delivers enough shadow. But I never saw so much ants ants and scorpions on the sites. Looks like park don't use enough deterrents to protect sites. For your understanding during weekend one scorpion bites one of our friend. Another one somehow hides on our stuff and we bring him home. and one more hides in our other friends stuff and they saw him in their garage.

This COE campground is a pleasant surprise. The sites are well spaced, level, paved, and very well designed. A large portion of the park is currently closed, so the area that is open feels like a nice little neighborhood. The bathhouse is a bit primitive, but totally adequate.

Very nice park and campground. Sites were level and OK distance apart. Bathrooms need updating and better cleaning but we're workable. Sites in our area had power, water and sewer. The overall area was beautiful with nice areas to walk.

Surprised about the many bad reviews about the attendants. We came before the crazy winter storm hit. The couple was nice, they are strict with the check in and check out, yes, but never disrespectful. There was another attendant on day also nice and helpful. I would say people are a little rude in the town, but I think that how they are around here. We are beyond thankful for this campground. They have heater and hot water in the clean bathrooms. A life saver when our water was frozen. We never lost power here. Felt secure and safe here during this crazy storm. The park os beautiful. We stayed a week due to the lack of power at home. Thank you!
