Canyon Lake - COE/Potters Creek

Overview

Potters Creek Park, managed by the **U.S. Army Corps of Engineers**, offers a quintessential Texas Hill Country experience on the shores of Canyon Lake. Situated on the northwest side of the reservoir, this park is known for its sprawling acreage and well-maintained facilities. It provides a peaceful retreat where the focus remains on the natural environment and the vast expanse of the water. For RVers, this destination offers a balance of rugged beauty and the essential comforts needed for a relaxing multi-day stay.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled within the **limestone ridges** and rolling hills characteristic of central Texas. Canyon Lake itself is the centerpiece, boasting clear, deep blue waters that are popular for year-round recreation. The surrounding terrain is dotted with live oaks and cedar trees, creating a scenic backdrop for every campsite. Because it is a **COE-managed property**, the density of sites is much lower than typical private parks, allowing guests to enjoy more privacy and a true sense of being immersed in the outdoors.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 100 campsites, many of which provide **water and electric hookups** to accommodate modern RVs. Travelers will find spacious layouts with several features designed for convenience:

  • Two dedicated **boat ramps** and a fishing pier for water access.
  • A designated swimming beach and several playground areas.
  • Restrooms with hot showers and on-site laundry facilities.
Many sites also offer **concrete pads and picnic shelters** to shield guests from the Texas sun, along with a dump station located near the park exit for easy maintenance.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the region is rich with Texas history and activity. Visitors are just a short drive from the historic district of **Gruene**, famous for its live music and local shopping. The **Guadalupe River** is nearby for those interested in tubing or fly fishing for trout. For a longer day trip, the charming town of Wimberley or the major attractions of San Antonio are within reach. Within the park, guests spend their time birdwatching, hiking the shorelines, or enjoying vibrant sunset views from the water's edge.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for **outdoor enthusiasts and families** who prefer a quieter, more natural setting over a busy resort atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for **boaters and anglers** who want direct, convenient access to one of the most beautiful lakes in the state. If you value wide-open spaces, star-filled nights, and a slower pace of life, Potters Creek Park provides the perfect basecamp for exploring the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

We loved how clean the area was and that it was secure but also allowed us the flexibility to have our privacy as a team. What I would caution against is how long / how much effort it takes to get to the water. I highly recommend water shoes and any floating device you deem fit/fun. It's great that there is water, electricity, and a covered space depending on which site you get.

Not crowded as we were driving through area so they allowed us to choose a sight and book online then go back to front to check in. Good Tmobile 5G. Sites nicely spread out. Quiet. We mostly just needed to dump and have a night's stay and needed to move on but certainly could have stayed longer. Convenient to have water and electric at all sites. Grateful to have discount for the America the Beautiful Access Pass 👍👍

Beautiful corp of engineers park on Canyon lake. Lots of beautiful deer. Lake is still low and so no swim area. Sites have lots of space, covered picnic tables and long driveways with side parking for vehicles.

Very disappointed with how my family’s situation was handled. We booked a 2-night stay for the weekend of October 24th. Unfortunately, if you’re a local, you know how severe the storm was that weekend. We called multiple times requesting a refund for both nights since the storm made it impossible to leave our area safely. After several days of “processing,” the park ranger finally emailed us only to say they would refund just one night (Saturday), claiming we could have still come on Friday. That’s unreasonable considering it was literally storming, and traveling wasn’t safe or even possible. The lack of understanding, professionalism, and compassion was disappointing. It’s sad to see such poor customer service and disregard for local conditions.

Very large sites. The lake was down but the view was still beautiful. The restrooms were clean with plenty of hot water. Perfect location to visit San Antonio and Austin
