Cape Lookout

Overview

Cape Lookout State Park offers a quintessential Oregon Coast experience, nestled on a narrow sand spit between the Pacific Ocean and Netarts Bay. Known for its dramatic coastal views and diverse landscapes, the park provides a rugged yet accessible retreat for travelers. This location is a primary highlight of the Three Capes Scenic Route, attracting those who want to immerse themselves in the salty air and towering Sitka spruce trees that define the region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a short drive south of Tillamook, the park is defined by its lush old-growth forest and miles of pristine sandy beaches. The geography is unique, featuring a prominent headland that juts out two miles into the ocean, providing a natural windbreak for the campground. The proximity to Netarts Bay provides a calmer water environment for clamming and crabbing, offering a peaceful contrast to the powerful Pacific surf on the west side.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-prepared for RVers, offering over 30 full hookup sites and more than 130 electrical and water sites. Visitors have access to year-round hot showers and clean flush toilets, making it a comfortable stay even in the famously misty coastal weather. A convenient dump station is available on-site, and the well-spaced sites are often sheltered by thick coastal vegetation, providing a sense of privacy and protection from ocean breezes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature lovers can explore the Cape Lookout Trail, a popular five-mile round trip that leads to the tip of the cape for spectacular whale watching opportunities. Just a short drive away is the iconic Tillamook Creamery, a must-visit for foodies wanting to sample local cheeses and ice cream. For those seeking more exploration, the area offers access to the historic lighthouse at Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint and the towering dunes of Cape Kiwanda.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and families who prioritize natural beauty and direct beach access over commercial resort amenities. It serves as an excellent base for those who enjoy active exploration and photography, with endless coastal vistas to capture. If you prefer a tranquil setting where the crashing waves and rustling forest are the primary sounds, this park will fit your travel style perfectly.

If you're looking for a private campsite this park has many more than I've ever seen! The beach is a short walk and its beautiful! I've stayed here about five times and highly recommend it! The only reason I gave it four, instead of five stars is due to the bathroom. Again, not the worst I've seen by any means but four stars it is, and it wouldn't stop me from returning. A great campground!

This place is absolutely beautiful, clean and when 10:00 pm hits it’s so quiet you only hear the beach and the frogs even with a full campground. The beach is about a 2 minute walk , sunsets are incredible, firewood and ice is available at the ranger station. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked. Highly recommend this place to everyone looking for a great beach getaway whether it’s by yourself, or with friends/familiy.Hoping to come back next year.

Truly a treasure, whether you are visiting for the day or to camp. Plenty of paid parking upon arrival. There were park workers cleaning up the landscaping while we were there, as well as some volunteers. Almost completely direct access from the parking lot to the beach. There are many access points, restrooms onsite, and trails to walk. The beach itself is pretty spacious and so while there may be a lot of people, they aren't too close together. Many folks were using the bbq's to grill with charcoal and so it smelled additionally fantastic.

If you're seeking panoramic ocean vistas that truly steal your breath, look no further. This place is all about dramatic cliffs plunging into the roaring Pacific. The hike to the very tip is absolutely exhilarating – you're surrounded by lush forest one moment, then suddenly emerge to sweeping, unobstructed views of endless blue and whitecaps. Keep an eye out for whales! The sheer scale of the coastline from up there is incredible. It’s a powerful, awe-inspiring experience that makes you feel tiny in the best possible way. Come for the views, stay for the profound sense of wild beauty. Don't miss it!

My favorite camping/hiking spot. You have a beautiful beach alongside lush forests. The campground is well maintained and you have your choice of beach-side spots or spots in a more forested area. Yurts and cabins also are available. So quiet at night and there were no shenanigans the day and night I camped. The staff checking folks in was super friendly!
