Captain Cook/Discovery Campground

Overview

Captain Cook State Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat at the northern tip of the Kenai Spur Highway. Discovery Campground serves as the primary destination for RVers seeking a scenic coastal experience away from the busier hubs of the peninsula. This state-managed park provides a rugged, authentic Alaskan atmosphere where the forest meets the sea. It is widely recognized for its peaceful ambiance and expansive views of the Cook Inlet, making it a favorite for those who value nature over commercial development.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 25 miles north of Kenai in the Nikiski area, this park sits at the literal end of the road. The landscape is defined by towering spruce forests and dramatic bluffs that overlook the tide-swept waters. On clear days, visitors are treated to breathtaking sights of active volcanoes across the inlet, including Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna. The surrounding wilderness feels vast and untouched, offering a sense of isolation that is rare even in the Last Frontier.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state recreation area, Discovery Campground focuses on dry camping for self-contained RVs. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, carved into the natural wooded terrain to provide a high level of privacy. While there are no electrical or water hookups at the individual sites, the park provides vault toilets and hand-pumped well water. A seasonal dump station is located near the entrance, ensuring that RVers have access to essential waste management services while staying in the wild.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in beachcombing and agates along the shores of Discovery Beach. The nearby Swanson River is a popular spot for silver salmon fishing and leisurely canoe trips through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors often spend their time hiking the beach during low tide or exploring the short trails that wind through the coastal forest, keeping a sharp eye out for local moose, bears, and bald eagles.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for travelers who prefer boondocking and solitude over the amenities of a high-density luxury resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking to explore the natural wonders of the Kenai Peninsula without the typical tourist crowds. Because many sites can accommodate larger RV rigs, it attracts self-reliant explorers who want to witness Alaska's raw beauty while maintaining a comfortable home base in a quiet, forested setting.

Stayed at Discovery campground for a week. It was awesome and the Camp Host and his wife keep that campground clean. The forested sites are very comfortable and the entire campground is quiet. Very very recommended.

Fantastic camping area!! The beach is just steps away from camp spots. Amazing geology- at low tide you can go look for Spirit Stones- they are only found around this area! A ton of 4 wheeling space right next to campground. Have a campfire right on the beach with unbelievable views! Hosts were great.

It's a nice place, lots of woodlands, places to camp, prices are $20 dollars a night 🏕 toilets are all around which belong to each road turn where you park . Some places are not allowed for quad bikes, ATV signs. . Lots of mosquitoes 🦟 are absolutely everywhere, so prepare yourself . I just opened and closed door from a car and 3 were already in 🐒 otherwise beautiful area, enjoyable with tide out . Lots of benches for picnics are everywhere but not enjoyable with flying friends around 😅🤣🤣🤣
