Overview

Caribou-Targhee / Alpine North Loop Campground offers a serene escape nestled within the towering pines of western Wyoming. Located just outside the town of Alpine, this Forest Service facility provides an authentic mountain experience for RVers looking to disconnect. The park is defined by its scenic mountain vistas and immediate access to some of the region's most pristine waterways, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a genuine connection with nature.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated near the confluence of the Snake River and the Greys River, providing a lush, green backdrop throughout the summer months. Surrounded by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, visitors are treated to views of the rugged Salt River Range. The location serves as a vital gateway between the high desert and the high peaks, offering a tranquil atmosphere away from the heavier tourist traffic found closer to national park entrances.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the Alpine North Loop prioritizes nature over technology. The facility provides essential features for a comfortable off-grid stay:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water
  • Spacious sites with a picnic table and fire ring
  • Easy access to boat ramps on the nearby reservoir

While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, the sites are designed to accommodate various rig sizes. Travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and prepared for a dry camping adventure in the woods.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here. Just minutes away, the Palisades Reservoir provides ample space for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Anglers frequent the area for world-class trout fishing on the Snake River and its tributaries. For those looking to explore further, the vibrant town of Jackson and the entrance to Grand Teton National Park are within an hour's drive, offering a perfect day-trip opportunity for sightseeing and dining.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate the quiet solitude of the forest. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to fish or boat without the crowds of major commercial resort parks. 8-25-2025 UPDATE: Still love the campground. TOTALLY APPALLED WITH THE SMELL. I GO TO ENJOY THE PINES AND FRESH AIR. NOW THE CAMP HOSTS ARE POLLUTING THE AIR WITH OVERLY SCENTED LAUNDRY PRODUCTS! TOTALLY REDUCED THE VALUE OF THE CAMPGROUND! We've been going to this campground for decades. It's an incredible location. We were there this year and the camp host was fantastic. This couple was awesome people. Very meticulous care of the campground. We felt very comfortable there.

Great little campground close to the highway so it's a bit noisy, but the scenery is beautiful and makes up for it. We had planned on kayaking however the lake by the campground is only there in the spring and early summer the water is used for irrigation the rest of the summer and fall. When we were here, it was only the Snake River. The lake is large and a couple miles north. Very clean and well maintained campground. The camp hosts Ron and Kim are awesome.

Nice clean campground, but noisy. Lots of helicopters and of course highway traffic. Nice shade, but bring a pop up gazebo because there are lots of flies and mosquitoes galore. The squirrels are active, so make sure your dog is leashed. Huge metal tables and a nice fire ring with a grill. Water is available and several toilets. There’s a group site and a B loop too. Spots aren’t too close together which is nice. I love a campground where the hosts work to keep everything and everyone following the rules. Oh, bear boxes too.

Ron and Kim are absolutely the best camp hosts out there, kind, considerate, and definitely have the guests' comfort in mind. This was our first campground we stayed at in Wyoming, we spent two nights here. We continued our trip then came back for 2 more nights before ending our trip. Highway noise is present which might detour some, we personally enjoy the sound of traffic more then rowdy people so this campsite was very enjoyable. I never knew a vault restroom could smell good until we came here. They have the CLEANEST BATHROOMS in all four states we traveled ( UT, WY, MT, ID ). My kids were so impressed by the restrooms that they kept checking other restrooms on the trip to compare them to these LOL. Don't forget to take the little walk to the lake!

We really enjoyed this campground, the sites were private, lots of trees and shrubs between sites. We saw deer a few times! The water wasn't working but we were self contained so it wasn't an issue. Our camp host Paula was great! Loved her happy, bubbly personality. She paints alot of Rocks and one day we came back to find a little ladybug rock on our step, so cute. It's not too far from many places to explore. Would certainly return.
