Caribou-Targhee/Stoddard Creek
Overview
Stoddard Creek Campground, managed as part of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, offers a serene escape in the high country of Eastern Idaho. Located just north of Dubois, it serves as a convenient yet remarkably quiet stop for travelers navigating the corridor between Idaho and Montana. The park provides a rustic mountain atmosphere where the high desert transitions into lush forest, creating a unique backdrop for those seeking a natural camping experience. This is a classic forest service destination where the focus remains on the unspoiled landscape and the tranquility of the great outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet, the campground is nestled within a landscape of Douglas fir and lodgepole pine. The transition from the arid sagebrush plains of the Snake River Valley to the rugged foothills of the Beaverhead Mountains is striking. Visitors are treated to scenic views of the surrounding peaks that define the Continental Divide. Because it is slightly elevated above the valley floor, the park enjoys cooler summer temperatures and a diverse ecosystem that attracts local wildlife, including deer and various mountain bird species.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, Stoddard Creek focuses on providing essential facilities rather than resort-style luxuries. The campground features several back-in and pull-through sites that can accommodate medium-sized RVs and trailers. There are no electrical or water hookups available, making this a destination for self-contained travelers who enjoy dry camping. On-site amenities include vault toilets and seasonal drinking water. Each individual campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for enjoying the dark, star-filled Idaho nights far from city lights.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore within a short drive of the park. The area is a prime jumping-off point for exploring the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which offers rugged hiking and photography opportunities along the border. Birdwatchers often visit the nearby Camas National Wildlife Refuge to see migratory waterfowl. For those interested in water recreation, the Clark Canyon Reservoir is located just across the Montana state line, providing ample space for fishing and boating in a dramatic canyon setting.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal fit for self-contained RVers who prioritize peace, quiet, and proximity to nature over modern amenities. It is particularly well-suited for travelers on long-haul trips along I-15 who need a reliable place to rest away from heavy highway noise. If you appreciate primitive camping and want easy access to the vast wilderness of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Stoddard Creek offers the perfect blend of accessibility and mountain seclusion for a night or an extended stay.

Real nice campground. Good amenities and great service from the camp host. We stayed just one night as we were passing through. But would recommend this spot for multiple days, if that was needed by anyone.

Very nice and peaceful place, lower loop has sun cover from trees and large hill which makes it a lot cooler. Bring ATV for exploring or a Jeep as there's lots of trails. Park offers no hookups so be prepared but there is a water station next to the road. The camp sites have really nice fire pits, tables and grill stands and are on a concrete pad. Lower loop spots have large easy access for RV's and are pretty level as I didn't have to lower my jacks for leveling. Over all one of my favorite spots now!

Beautiful campsite about a mile from the interstate. The sites are far enough apart that they feel private. They are all clean, well maintained and have newer tables, camp stove stands and fire pits. Roger, the camp attendant, runs a tight ship, strictly enforcing generator and quiet hours. Plus he keeps the toilets immaculate. Excellent.

Great camping spot with lots of shade. It has multiple spigots, very clean bathrooms, and bear proof trash bins. This is one of the cleanest campgrounds we have been to. The camp host, Roger, keeps the campground very clean and equipped. He cleans every table and camping spot. It is so clean you could literally eat off the table.
