Caribou-Targhee/West End

Overview

The West End Campground, nestled within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a rustic experience. Located near the banks of the Fall River, this destination provides a peaceful alternative to the more crowded areas of the region. It serves as a gateway to the remote southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, emphasizing a connection with nature over modern luxuries and bustling crowds.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 25 miles east of Ashton, Idaho, the park is defined by its lush lodgepole pine canopy and immediate access to the Fall River. The surroundings are characterized by rugged forest terrain and the soothing sounds of rushing water. This location is particularly noted for its proximity to the Cave Falls entrance of Yellowstone, offering a much quieter entry point into one of the nation's most famous wilderness areas.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on primitive comforts rather than modern technology. The park provides essential features for a comfortable dry-camping stay:

  • Vault toilets located conveniently near most campsites.
  • Potable water available seasonally via hand pumps.
  • Spacious sites equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring.

While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, the layouts provide privacy and room for many modest-sized RVs and trailers looking for a true forest experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers often frequent the area for the exceptional fly fishing opportunities on the Fall River. For hikers, the nearby Bechler region offers miles of trails leading to spectacular waterfalls and unique thermal features. A short drive or bike ride takes you to Cave Falls, a massive, wide waterfall that is a must-see for photographers and nature lovers. The area is also a prime spot for wildlife viewing, including frequent sightings of moose and elk.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize solitude and outdoor recreation over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for those looking to explore the quiet side of Yellowstone or for families wanting a back-to-basics camping experience. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a river and do not mind skipping the Wi-Fi for a few days, this forest retreat will likely suit your travel style perfectly.

I did an easy hike on Nemo and Grumpy Loop near Victor. Not too crowded and not too hot in mid-August.
