Carl G Washburne
Overview
Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park offers a quiet, forested retreat along the rugged Oregon Coast. Named after a former highway commissioner, this park provides a tranquil atmosphere tucked away from busier coastal hubs. It is a place where the lush coastal forest meets the Pacific breeze, offering a unique camping experience. The park is renowned for its spacious layouts and the deep sense of solitude it provides to travelers who want to escape the crowd.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 14 miles north of Florence, the park sits nestled on the east side of Highway 101. Despite its position inland, it features a dedicated pedestrian underpass providing safe access to miles of sandy beach. The surroundings are defined by ancient trees and thick ferns, creating a green canopy that protects campers from the elements. It is common to see Roosevelt elk grazing in the meadows nearby, emphasizing the park's deep connection to the local ecosystem.
Amenities & Park Features
This state park is well-equipped for RV travelers, offering various site types for different needs. Key features include:
- Several full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electricity.
- Access to clean flush toilets and hot showers for all guests.
- An on-site dump station and available firewood for evening campfires.
The sites are specifically designed for privacy, separated by thick native vegetation. While the park lacks cell service, it encourages a true off-grid experience while providing the essential utilities required for a comfortable stay on the coast.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure lies just beyond the campground with the famous Hobbit Trail, leading hikers through moss-covered tunnels of greenery to a secluded beach. A short drive south brings visitors to the iconic Heceta Head Lighthouse, a premier maritime landmark. Nature enthusiasts can also explore nearby Sea Lion Caves or visit the Darlingtonia State Natural Site. The proximity to the beach makes tide pooling and beachcombing daily highlights for most guests.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers seeking a serene, disconnected getaway rather than a high-energy resort. It appeals most to nature lovers and photographers who value the raw beauty of the Oregon shoreline. Because of its shaded, private sites and easy access to hiking trails, it is a perfect fit for adventurous couples and families who want to explore natural wonders at a slower pace. It is a favorite for those who prefer the sound of the wind in the trees.

Been here maybe 3 times and will definitely be my go to beach. Last time spent a few hours and had lunch it was amazing!

We had a great time here! Adding it to our favorites list. It is a little bit more low key and quiet. They keep their bathrooms very clean, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. They have junior ranger activities going on for kids during the weekends. It’s safe for kids to ride around on their bikes, and the kids had a blast in the sandbox. Easy access to the beach with a 1/2 mile walk. Picnic area has corn hole.

This was a wonderful place to camp. When we went a large portion of one of the loops was closed so the campsite we got was quiet and secluded. The hosts were friendly and the showers were clean, I'm pretty sure they were being serviced daily. Beautiful setting with a short walk to the beach, and a ton of access to other trails. Would definitely visit again.

A family favorite. Washouts of a couple years ago continue to plague the sewer hookups but power and water still work. Even full it doesn't seem full. Sites are semi private and showers are clean. Fire pits and table at each site.

Absolutely stunning beach. I also stayed at the campground in one of the yurts. It was quiet, clean, and enjoyable. Just know you do have to walk a bit to get to the shore. The path is on the far end of the campground. It is very well maintained and a beautiful walk along the way.
