Carlyle Lake - COE/Boulder Rec Area

Overview

Boulder Recreation Area is a standout destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the eastern shores of Carlyle Lake. Known for its expansive water views and well-spaced campsites, this park offers a serene escape for those looking to immerse themselves in the southern Illinois landscape. The park is characterized by its mature shade trees and direct access to the water, making it a favorite for regional travelers seeking a high-quality, government-run camping experience. It strikes a balance between rugged natural beauty and well-maintained modern convenience that RVers have come to expect from COE facilities.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Clinton County, just outside of Carlyle, IL, the park sits on the largest man-made lake in the state. The surrounding area is defined by vast shorelines and rolling agricultural land, providing a peaceful backdrop away from major highway noise. Visitors often appreciate the proximity to the Carlyle Lake Dam and the various surrounding wildlife management areas. The location is ideal for those who enjoy open horizons and the unique ecosystem that comes with a massive freshwater reservoir, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining accessible to local supplies.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RVers, featuring sites with 50-amp electric hookups and level pads that can accommodate large rigs. While the sites are electric-only, the facility provides convenient access to fresh water and a centrally located dump station. On-site facilities include:

  • Modern shower buildings and flush toilets
  • Multiple boat ramps for lake access
  • Playgrounds and picnic shelters
  • Fire rings and picnic tables at every site

The park also features paved interior roads, which are excellent for evening walks or for children to ride their bikes safely.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities dominate the itinerary here, with Carlyle Lake being world-renowned for its exceptional sailing and fishing opportunities. Anglers frequently visit the area to catch white bass, crappie, and channel catfish. For those who prefer land-based recreation, the nearby Eldon Hazlet State Park offers additional hiking and bird-watching opportunities. You can also explore the historic town of Carlyle for local dining or visit the General Dean Suspension Bridge, a local landmark and historic site that is just a short drive from the campground entrance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want to be steps away from the water. It is also a fantastic choice for families looking for a quiet, budget-friendly vacation in a safe and clean environment. Because of the spacious layouts, it is particularly well-suited for big-rig owners who often struggle with tight maneuvers in private campgrounds. If you value natural scenery and peaceful evenings over high-energy resort amenities, this COE park will perfectly fit your travel style.

We had a wonderful time at Boulder Campground over Labor Day weekend. The site was great and the views to the lake are spectacular! The camp hosts were so lovely. The shower house/facilities are very clean. And life on the lake is the best! We will be going back!

We were at site 4 and it was so quiet. The most relaxing time. Went to the marina and got ice and some small things. Reasonably priced and very friendly

The site I had was in the sun most of the day. There isn't a designated swim area. The lawn people skipped cutting grass one week. Terrible mosquitoes. Beautiful sunsets ans although really hot, there fortunately was a breeze daily. It was all worth it to see 2 youth eagles fly the nest right from my campsite. The camp hosts were really friendly and helpful to any needs or questions. Don't forget anything, coz it's about 13 -14 miles back to Carlyle. Boat ramp and huge parking lot, small playground and picnic area. Boulder has 82 campsites. I believe 3 or 4 are buddy sites. Please keep in mind, there is a LOW speed limit for a reason. 15 MPH. I say to the little Grey car that almost took a pedestrian out. 15mph isn't supposed to stir up dust. SLOW DOWN.

Site 32. Nice and wide and level. Paved with electric only. Nice campground overall. Easy to find and navigate through.
