Carlyle Lake - COE/Coles Creek Rec Area

Overview

Coles Creek Recreation Area sits along the eastern shores of Carlyle Lake, the largest man-made lake in Illinois. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park offers a quintessential Midwestern camping experience where the water meets the woods. It is widely recognized for its well-spaced campsites and lush, canopied landscapes, providing a tranquil escape for RVers seeking a blend of natural beauty and reliable infrastructure.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside Carlyle, IL, the park is characterized by its rolling hills and dense stands of hardwood trees. The shoreline access is a primary draw, offering expansive views of the 26,000-acre lake. Because it is a managed federal site, the surroundings are preserved to maintain a balance between recreational use and wildlife habitat conservation, ensuring that visitors often spot white-tailed deer and various migratory birds right from their campsites.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features over 100 sites, many of which provide 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern rigs. While the sites are largely electric-only, the park provides convenient access to fresh water fill stations and a well-maintained sanitary dump station. Additional facilities include modern shower houses, multiple playgrounds for families, and a dedicated swimming beach. Boaters will appreciate the multi-lane concrete ramp, which provides easy entry into the lake’s productive fishing waters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campsite, visitors can explore the city of Carlyle for local dining and supplies. Outdoor enthusiasts often head to Eldon Hazlet State Park for additional hiking trails and birdwatching opportunities. The lake itself is a premier destination for sailing and trophy fishing, particularly for white bass and channel catfish. For those looking to venture slightly further, the region’s local wineries offer a relaxing way to spend an afternoon tasting Illinois-grown vintages.

Who This Park Is Best For

Coles Creek is ideal for nature-loving families and retirees who prioritize peace and quiet over the bells and whistles of commercial resorts. Its large, shaded sites provide excellent privacy, making it a favorite for those who enjoy extended stays in a forest setting. If your travel style favors campfire evenings, lakeside sunrises, and a slower pace of life, this park is a perfect addition to your Illinois itinerary.

Site 125 was pretty level and we had plenty of room for our 40’ motorhome and toad. Beautiful sunset views. It’s rocky going down to water, but doable. It’s the only way to fish from shore.

Awesome beautiful campground with clean bathrooms and free showers!!!! We camped at a spot right on the lake. Water is warm and calm and clean! Very swimmable. The grounds are very clean and spotless well manicured and flat for tent set up. Super elevated camping experience. Booked online $20. Each spot has electric hook up. No issues here!!! Everyone friendly and quiet. Highly recommend.

Not enough shade trees so it was really hot for most of the day until the sun started setting. Other than that, it is a really nice campground. There is a playground that is kind of in the middle of loops 4 & 5 that we could watch or kids play from our campsite. There were flush toilets on every loop that were clean and a shower house at the entrance to loops 4 & 5 that was also clean.

Great spot. Park was awesome. Ranger and sheriff patrols. They also have evening programs for the kids to learn about animals and the park.

A real gem of a rv campground. Of all the locations we’ve been, this is in the top 2 (the other NW Atlanta GA). Huge spacious lots, and plenty of grass space from your neighbors. Fairly open, not forested but seems like 300 sapling trees planted so more shade and privacy in the works. We visited early September after summer season, and very peaceful and mostly adults. Very quiet, no blaring music, mostly seniors so a more mature and friendly crowd. $5/day parking at water where b2 boat launch ramps are. Definitely a huge body of water, top of our future list to launch our inflatable boat as at this time of year plenty of space to maneuver and water traffic minimal. Wish we had a huge body of water as this at home and remote enough to keep the noise down. Only suggestions, don’t allow fishing from boat launch ramps as someone parked at one and set up 3-4 chairs down the ramp as if their property. And need walking trails. Also why reservation checkin confirmation states 5 pm but doesn’t state office closes at 6 pm? Awkwardly we departed at 10:30 am well before the published 4 pm checkout but the next occupants arrived before we departed and front office told them we had left already? Hmmmmmm.
