Carnegie SVRA
Overview
Carnegie SVRA offers a specialized outdoor experience for those who live for the thrill of the trail. Located in the hills of Northern California, this State Vehicular Recreation Area provides over 1,500 acres of terrain dedicated to motorized off-road use. It is a unique corner of the California State Parks system where mechanical skill and outdoor exploration meet. Unlike traditional quiet campgrounds, Carnegie is a high-energy destination where the sound of engines and the smell of adventure define the atmosphere for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled within the Corral Hollow Canyon between Tracy and Livermore, the park features a rugged landscape of steep hills and narrow canyons. The surroundings are characterized by dry, golden grasslands and oak-covered ridges that offer challenging elevations for riders. Its location serves as a convenient gateway for Central Valley and Bay Area residents looking for a quick getaway into the California backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
The camping facilities at Carnegie are designed for utility and convenience for those hauling trailers. The park offers dry camping sites that accommodate RVs and toy haulers. Key features include:
- Access to vault toilets and coin-operated showers for a comfortable stay.
- Communal water filling stations and a dump station for guest convenience.
- Individual sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables for evening relaxation.
While there are no electrical or water hookups at the sites, the layout is spacious enough for most large toy haulers to navigate comfortably and set up a basecamp.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the extensive trail system and specialized riding areas. Visitors can enjoy several distinct features:
- Challenging hill climbs that test the limits of any rider and machine.
- A dedicated motocross track for high-speed practice and skill building.
- Technical canyon trails for exploring the local geology at a slower pace.
Beyond the park, the Livermore Valley wineries offer a sophisticated change of pace, and the city of Tracy provides all necessary urban amenities for restocking supplies.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for OHV enthusiasts and families who travel with dirt bikes, ATVs, or side-by-sides. If you prefer a tranquil, wooded retreat, this may not be your first choice; however, for active RVers who enjoy a rugged, social environment centered around motorsports, Carnegie is unmatched. It serves as a perfect basecamp for those who prioritize trail access over resort-style luxuries and want to maximize their time on the throttle.

A great place to bring dirt bikes and ATVs and drive around. This place is not packed but really fun to drive around. Just $5 to enter. If you don’t have ATV or a dirt bike you can use a 4*4 car to drive on open ground. It was super fun.

Be careful! It can get very very hot and there's no cell reception! And bring water!!! Tracy was 91°F but my truck was reading 103°F in the shade. I found Pottery (or potter's) loop to be quite challenging but manageable for an experienced street bike rider first time dirt bike rider. All the other trails are much harder. If you're experienced, you aren't reading my review to see if you should go or not. If you're new and wondering, avoid going alone. I have plenty of outdoor training that the worst i was going to have happen is a flat tire and a long walk back to my truck. There is no cell phone reception and 2-way can be spotting on the back side of a mountain. So having fellow riders that can get help in case of anything is a must for new riders. The trail was about 10min long or more at 10-15mph. Try walking that injured and no bike and it can be over 1hr. If you're thinking about buying a bike and going here, go with the biggest small bike you can flat foot when stopped. I'm 5ft 7in and my 2025 CRF300L is a little tall. You can grow into a bigger bike. But if you can't handle a tall motorcycle like a bicycle, you'll struggle here and it won't be fun. Also, a 150cc or smaller will not have too much power giving you more control. Sure, there are times you need the power to climb. But i think the struggle of less power is better than the struggle of too much. Whiskey Throttle can cause you more problems than having to "flinstone" a smaller bike up a hill.

A nice little 4x4 area. We took a model 3 out there and it was pretty good in the dirt surprisingly. It was a four-wheel drive version so that helped and my son knows how to drive off road. It wasn't too big though. It would be nice of his little bit bigger.

First time going there with our son and he had a blast. He's just starting out and they had beginner tracks for him to get going. Then now tracks as they advance. Can't wait to go again soon.

Carnegie is an exceptional recreational destination that boasts incredible dirt biking opportunities across its fantastic trails. Moreover, there's a dedicated off-road course tailored for trucks and SUVs. While the off-road pathways may not be extensive, they present a formidable challenge for your vehicle, filled with various obstacles that truly put its capabilities to the test. Although it may not compare to the vast off-roading expanses of Alaska or Colorado, it certainly promises an exhilarating experience. Overall, this is an outstanding spot for families and off-road enthusiasts alike. Entry for trucks and SUVs is just $5.00, and camping or RV facilities are available, along with other convenient amenities.
