Carolina Beach

Overview

Carolina Beach State Park offers a unique coastal camping experience tucked away in a lush, wooded environment. Located on the banks of the Cape Fear River, this park provides a serene alternative to the bustling beach scene nearby. It serves as a gateway to exploring the biodiversity of North Carolina's coast, featuring rare carnivorous plants and scenic river views that attract nature enthusiasts and casual campers alike. Unlike many coastal parks, the setting here is deeply forested, providing a distinct sense of seclusion while remaining remarkably close to modern beach town conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated on Pleasure Island, bordered by the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway. While it feels secluded among the oak and pine trees, it is only a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean. The surroundings are characterized by sandy trails, salt marshes, and tidal creeks, creating a diverse ecosystem that transitions from maritime forest to sandy dunes within the park boundaries. This strategic location allows travelers to enjoy the calm of the river and the excitement of the surf within the same afternoon.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers can choose from a variety of sites, including several updated spots equipped with full hookups that provide water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electricity. The park features a variety of amenities designed for outdoor lovers:

  • A secluded marina with public boat ramps for easy water access.
  • Over six miles of well-marked hiking trails through distinct habitats.
  • Modern bathhouses with hot showers and clean facilities.

The campsites are spacious and tucked under a canopy of oak and pine trees, providing a shaded retreat from the bright coastal sun during the heat of the day.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring the Venus Flytrap Trail is a must-see activity, as it is one of the few places in the world where these plants grow natively in the wild. Just outside the park, visitors can visit the Carolina Beach Boardwalk for classic seaside amusement or head south to Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the North Carolina Aquarium. Fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching are popular activities that take place right within the park's expansive borders, offering endless opportunities for quiet recreation and wildlife photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-loving RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded setting over a traditional high-traffic oceanfront resort. It is a fantastic choice for families and amateur naturalists looking for unique educational opportunities regarding local flora and fauna. Because the park offers direct marina and river access, it is also an excellent fit for travelers bringing along boats or kayaks to explore the river and surrounding marshes. It is the perfect spot for those who want to be near the beach without staying in the middle of the crowds.

We stayed in mid Oct and the weather was lovely. It was still warm with a breeze coming from the beach. At night, it did get colder but nothing like a sleeping bag can’t fix! The space we picked had plenty of space for all of our camp gear. Only complaint was the community restroom was a little bit of a walk from our site. Either way, would come back!!

Very nice state park, free to use. Lots of hiking trails and areas to walk. Only recommendation is to definitely use insect repellent if you are walking the trails in the woods, because we were getting swarmed while walking.

it’s clear the ranger/anyone else in charge care very much about protecting the cleanliness and safety of the area. the bathrooms were well kept, there was 0 litter anywhere that I noticed, and they provide both a picnic table & fire pit at every site. we loved that there were hiking trails directly behind our lot leading to Snow’s Cut, because it was a quick way to catch the sunsets on the water. worth noting though, that you can hear nearby roads throughout the day/night (at least at #77 we could) - we didn’t mind it but some people may prefer complete silence. great experience overall!

Carolina Beach State Park is a gem. It’s got a little bit of everything — hiking trails that are easy enough for a casual walk but still give you that feeling of being out in nature, peaceful views along the Cape Fear River, and some really cool plant life (the Venus flytraps are worth checking out). The park feels well taken care of, with clean trails and clear signage. It’s also not overly crowded, which makes it perfect for a quiet morning hike or just clearing your head after a busy week. Parking is convenient, and the marina area gives it a nice “by the water” vibe without the chaos of the main beach. If you’re looking for a spot that’s relaxing but still has plenty to explore, this park is perfect. It’s the kind of place you end up returning to again and again.
